Strut Fitting & wing tiedown bolt
Strut Fitting & wing tiedown bolt
Plans call for eight AN4-21A bolts to attach the wing strut fittings. I
ordered and received a 5/16" forged shoulder eyebolt from MAM for the
wing tiedown (I'm still looking at MAM's versus ordering a different one
from a location suggested by list members).
I assume the tiedown bolt replaces one of the eight AN4-21A bolts on the
strut fitting--correct?
I'm assuming that I do NOT want to enlarge one of the stut fitting holes
to 5/16 (for stress/strength reasons)--correct?
Thank you,
Ted

There was absolutely no documentation for the tie down kit from
MAM. Please post if you find any recommendations.

Ted, I would have to go measure the width of the fitting those -4 go through
but I would think you could go up to an AN5 and still have plenty of edge
distance.

Strut Fitting & wing tiedown bolt
For those wanting to use a "D" shaped eyenut with a grade 5 bolt to maitain
the full strength of all strut bolts there is a 316 Stainless Steel forged
Lifting Eyenut with a 1" x 3/4" hole in 1/4 inch (and larger) with UNC
thread available from Bosun Supplies Co PO Box 1283 Teaneck New Jersey
07666. Ph (201) 837 7007 Fax (201) 837 5999.
The 1/4" eyenut is Item No S03222-007 for a cost of about US$7.00 ea
available on the internet at www.bosunsupplies.com. You will find them
referred to as "forged eyenuts" under eyenuts which will bring up the
picture but it is easy to miss.
I gave up on the local marine shops last year and scoured the internet
before I found them. There may be alternative "D" shaped eyenuts around but
they wont be easy find.

Subject: Strut Fitting & wing tiedown bolt
Plans call for eight AN4-21A bolts to attach the wing strut fittings. I
ordered and received a 5/16" forged shoulder eyebolt from MAM for the
wing tiedown (I'm still looking at MAM's versus ordering a different one
from a location suggested by list members).
I assume the tiedown bolt replaces one of the eight AN4-21A bolts on the
strut fitting--correct?
I'm assuming that I do NOT want to enlarge one of the stut fitting holes
to 5/16 (for stress/strength reasons)--correct?
Thank you,
Ted

Strut Fitting & wing tiedown bolt
http://www.wichard.com/catalogue/catalogue_en.php
FWIW that link shows a photo of a forged stainless eyenut. While I
didn't find it on the American site, I have in my hand part number 6341
which has a 5/16-18 thread, and a 0.71" rope hole. It was a bit pricey
at about cdn$20. from West Marine. From memory it is rated at 7700 lb
load parallel to the bolt. That is more than twice as strong as the 1/4"
bolt part.
However the strength of these things is apparently much much less for
offset loads. Round rings and and especially rings with wide flanges
(large diameter nut) like this retain more of their rated strength when
loaded offcenter. I'll probably put a short aluminum spacer under it.
Any forged part should be much stronger than a welded part of course.
MAM's welded eyebolt has a 5/16" stainless bolt so I have no problem
using a 5/16" bolt although I will drill out one of the inboard holes in
the strut fitting, not one of the outboard holes.
OTOH since I've never heard of a problem with the welded eyebolts that I
have from MAM, perhaps I should have just used those ;)

Strut Fitting & wing tiedown bolt
It's been a while since I tied down a Cessna 172, but I seem to remember
they have a steel ring about 1" diameter that is attached (but free to move
all around) to some sort of eye bolt in the strut attachment area. This
setup would allow you to use the strongest eye bolt available, because the
hole only has to be large enough to accept the steel ring, which can be
large enough to take any size rope. And we all know that if Cessna did it
that way, then it must be the best way, right?
Then there is the retractable setup they have on the 206.....

The picture of the eyebolt at the below link appears to exactly match
what MAM originally sent to me. The problem with that bolt is that
there are threads all the way along the bolt. The "grip length" or
non-threaded portion of the bolt is very short, e.g. less than 3/8". As
you all know, the threads act as stress focus points. I ended up
sending this bolt back to MAM.
I do have a question on the below comment: What is the difference
between placing the bolt in the "inboard" versus "outboard" holes? They
are so close together why would that matter?
Thanks!

Strut Fitting & wing tiedown bolt
Hi Ted
There is probably enough extra strength there that it doesn't really
matter which hole you drill out but I like to stack the odds in my
favour so my thinking was as follows:
The larger hole shouldn't make any difference to the strength of the
aluminum strut since it represents only perhaps a 1% reduction in cross
sectional area. And the strut is almost assuredly sized to resist
buckling failure under compression which means that the middle of the
strut is the critical area not the ends.
OTOH making the hole in the end fitting does reduce the fitting cross
section by several percent. That fitting carries the full strut load
from the wing bolt to the first strut bolt which is the outboard 1/4"
bolt in the strut. Therefor my preference would be to not drill out the
outboard bolt hole and weaken the fitting by several per cent. The
inboard section of the fitting say between the two inboard bolts will
carry much less than the full strut load since the outboard bolts are
taking some of the load. So the way I see it, making one of those
inboard holes larger won't affect the strength of the fitting at all.
Another example of that thinking would be a tapered fitting where the
fitting starts off wide and tapers down to perhaps half as wide by the
inboard bolt.
I guess I threw the comment out because someone mentioned edge distances
and I don't think that the edge distance rule of thumb means anything in
a case like this with a thick fitting.
Oh and I do agree that given a choice I'll also use a grade 5 or 8 bolt
with as close as I can get to the proper grip length for the eye nut. I
don't think it will make any difference to the strength of the eyenut as
the bolt is only as strong as the weakest part and even one thread will
determine the weakest part. However the solid shank will make the strut
to fitting joint stronger. Again it is splitting hairs a bit but the
chanllenge for me is to do this the best way I can. Wayne had an
interesting comment on this bolt a year a three ago. I guess some guys
interpreted the manual differently and were flying with one less bolt
than intended in this fitting. So I guess we know that there are more
bolts there than needed regardless ;)
