drill bit point angle

Post by Jesse Jenks » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:15 am

I can't seem to find anything other than 135 degree points. The book I got
(Standard Aircraft Construction) sais to use 118 for aluminum. Any alternate
opinions on this, or sources for 118 points online? I ordered a 1-60 index,
118 degree, HSS from a local tool store, but their individual bits are on
the pricey side. I also got a 1-60 cobalt index from ebay. I just wanted to
get some extra #40, 30, and 10 , and 6"/12" lengths in HSS.

I just buy Butterfield "jobber" bits in packages of 10 or 12 from the local
machinery supply house. Cheap enough that you don't give a second thought to
sharpening and just throw them out when they stop cutting!

Stop worrying, start making holes!! :o))

Out here in the sticks it's tough to find numbered drill bits so instead of
using #40 bits I just bought 3/32"bits all you're doing with the small size
is making a hole for a cleco anyway.

I prefer the 118* split points for #40 bits as they wander less when
making the initial hole for me. Not an issue for drilling out
pre-punched holes however which is mostly what you will be doing. I
think they are a tad faster too but that could just be because some were
from different manufacturers. Definately buy the #40 bits 10 or 20 at a
time. I've used at least 50 of them and maybe half as many #30.

I haven't noticed much difference between 118* and 135* bits in the #30
size.

I think I did the whole airframe with only about 3 each of the #40 and
#30 6" bits. One each of the 12" #40, #30, and #11 although I think I
have a spare of each somewhere.

I have purchased from KBC machinery, DoAll, and a local machinery
supplier. They all had a range of qualities and prices available.
