Insured off-airport operation

Post by bransom » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:00 am

Speaking of legal/insured MTOW, it seems typical insurance policies often
stipulate "no operation from unpaved runways". Is this true? Or, are there
policies with a higher premium for this privelege? And then, lets just
say, ...um, that the non-pavement "runway" isn't even an airport?

Insured off-airport operation

Now there's a scary thought... when I was working on my license I only flew
to 2 airports that had paved runways... while I went to 4 or 5 without
pavement. You just gotta love Alaska!

Insured off-airport operation

The only place I have seen that stipulated in an insurance policy was a
training schools coverage to keep students off grass fields (and actually
didn't see the policy, they just told everyone that to keep it from
happening I think!). Generally anywhere that is constude to be an aerodrome
(which in Canada is >ANY< surface that an airplane has landed and/or taken
off from) is insured to my knowledge but will do some reading tonight (to
node off to) incase I missed something in my policy!

Walter Klatt

Insured off-airport operation

Post by Walter Klatt » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:00 am

I can tell you from personal experience that insurance companies
do cover off-airport landing mishaps. This happened during my
initial tail dragger learning on my Rebel, where I screwed up a
landing on a gravel road beside a golf course, and ended up with
a prop strike. No problems whatsoever with my insurance company,
and ended up getting my engine overhauled, at a small additional
cost.
