My apologies to those not interested in this winter maddness first!!.....if
this is you please hit "DELETE" now!

Bruce Tinney spent a good part of yesterday packing the ice surface and
myself a good 3+ hours over the same area again today. If the snow holds off
in any quanity long enough for the cold temps to get at it tonight, and
throughout the week, we will be good to go for Sat morning - weather
controlling of course!

We have packed an area on the South/East end of the lake about 250' wide
across the entire end of the lake to use as a parking area so nobody is
stuck/frozen into slush. We also packed a narrow take off strip about 30'
wide x 500' long N/W bound - close to the East shoreline. This strip will be
strictly for take offs and not intended for landing on.

The ice along the length of the lake, on it's longest center line, is pretty
good in places and slushy in some others. The wind has helped cut the snow
layer down and allowed for ice to form on about 65% of the length, with
other areas about 10" of snow and then some water/slush under it. There are
no hard drifts at this point, just a gradual change in depth from almost
bare ice to the 10" deep spots. This snow/slush shouldn't be an issue for
landing and as long as you keep your speed up and taxi to our packed out
parking area all should be fine.

DEFINITELY NO STRAIGHT >WHEELS< FOLKS -- Skis or wheel skis only!

I will have a multicoloured windsock out in the middle of the lake on a reed
patch. If you land along the lake close to this windsock, this is the area I
have checked out (right down the centerline of the lake). Closer to the
lake's sides it is VERY slushy...so make sure you land along the center line
only! This is an approximate heading of 300* or 120* depending on
wind/landing direction.

We will continue to monitor the lake conditions throughout the week and
repack if necessary pending snow fall, temperatures, etc.

I will mark out the parking area with Large Orange traffic cones and the
take off strip with small cones. Do not land in either of these areas
(unless you're the first one here!-which will be me most likely!)

We are back on our old lake that we used for many years - St Andrews (Mud)
Lake. This is a small inland lake on the penninsula of land between Midland
and Penetang Harbours.

Same time ~10am to 1pm (or ? if nice day!) BBQ Hamburgers/hotdogs/pop/coffee
will be available for lunch behind our tarp "shelter" against the East
shore, as well as a wood stove going to warm you up or dry you out! (and
Dave...no comments like "what... no chili"... this year!)

The lake is ~1/2 mile directly West of my field, ~3/4 mile directly East of
Penetang Harbour, ~1/2 mile directly South of the new Super Jail (looks like
a fallen over farriswheel from the air). IF you see the Blue/White water
tower in the Penetang Industrial park just veer about 3500' to the EAST of
it and you will be over the lake! Coordinates of the Lake are N44-47-38
W79-54-27 and elevation is APPROX 730' ASL

Note that we use 122.85 on the Radio as this is Midland Airport Unicom
frequency. Please be on it and TALK--"Penetang Traffic----"! IF wind favours
landing 30 then right hand or left hand circuits are fine. If landing is 12
then only Left hand circuits should be performed and must be kept as tight
to the North end of the lake as possible and try not to overfly too much of
the subdivision.

Driving? From HWY#93..follow right into Penetang. At the FIRST traffic light
(we have 4 now!) turn RIGHT onto THOMPSON RD. Follow Thompson Rd all the way
to the end when it hits a stop sign. Turn RIGHT onto ROBERT ST and follow to
the end. Turn RIGHT onto FULLER AVE and then IMMEDIATELY turn LEFT onto TAY
POINT RD. Follow until you go through the "S" turn and then turn LEFT onto
ZOSCHE DRIVE. Take Zosche across to the end and turn LEFT onto TINNEY DRIVE.
(so that's three Rights and three Lefts!) You will see cars parked along the
curved section of this road. Probably best to go up to the next corner..do a
three point and come back and park along the West side of the road. Access
path to the lake is right beside the yellow road sign.

PLEASE--anyone that you know of that doesn't have email and that you know is
planning to come, please call them and tell them we are back on Mud Lake!

I will post an update sometime on Friday (probably around 1 or 2 pm, before
I leave for Hamilton). Then, pending that it's a tentative go at that point
in time, I will post again by 8/8:30am at the latest as to what weather is
allowing on Saturday morning. If not Saturday then the same thing will apply
for Sunday. The weekend after that we have somewhere else to fly to... so x
your fingers for this weekend!!

Ya know, Wayne; all this has nothing to do with building, but is terribly interesting. Considering that it's 60 degrees and raining, down here. My biggest concern is whether or not my strip is going to be too muddy, this weekend. Reading about 'packing snow and how deep the slush is', can be a real change of pace, ya know. No way I could do it, but damned if it don't sound like fun to land on ski's just to freeze my butt off, while eating a burger! If all this goes down, as planned, how about posting a picture or two?

After coming home damn near hypothermic (had to skip a night skiing
"appointment" with my daughter) I'm starting to wonder if all this work is
really worth it every year. But you know, come fly-in day it's nothing but
all smiles and a great time is had by all every year (well except that year
Willy cartwheeled his Christavia!!).

Really need to get out and do something fun quickly........... as the winter
"BLAHS" are starting to set in pretty good!

Hi Bob I built my skis 12" wide by 66" long. They seem to be about the
right size. I guess a tail ski would be nice in deep snow but I didn't
build one and digging the tailwheel in with up elevator gives good braking.

Hey Greg, how about a little trade? How about shipping some of that sunshine
up here where we need it, we'll send some of that snow & ice back for you to
play in! C'ourse you can keep the humidity....;^)

Back on a serious note, how is the Elite coming? You know, since we visited
with you, Rick & Wendy we have kept the pace up to the point where we are goint
to be at the fuselage shortly!

Take care & don't hide in the office with the A/C, you won't get much building
done that way!

All this talk of snow, ice & freezing weather. I don't compute!!!!!
I just came up to my airconditioned office from the factory floor;
temperature on the factory floor a "balmy" 36 degrees C(99 degrees F) and
only 80 % relative humidity. Tomorrow expected 40 degrees C.
So I can't see any problem with snow or ice.

VH-REB is j....u....s...t... about ready to begin flight testing
with the new (it's nearly time -ex actually ... but it IS new to us) IO-320
....of 180 HP ..... (going to run it "on condition" ... fingers crossed)
I reckon it's gonna climb like an angel shot in the @$$ with an Exocet
missile !!! :)

Hey Greg, how about a little trade? How about shipping some of that
sunshine
up here where we need it, we'll send some of that snow & ice back for you to
play in! C'ourse you can keep the humidity....;^)

Back on a serious note, how is the Elite coming? You know, since we visited
with you, Rick & Wendy we have kept the pace up to the point where we are
goint
to be at the fuselage shortly!

Take care & don't hide in the office with the A/C, you won't get much
building
done that way!

Midland/Penetang Ski Flyin UPDATE

Hello Dave,
I am going a little slower than you in the building area; business has kept
me busy. Rick has just signed off the last section of my tail group; now
next the wings.
I seem to be going ahead in the FWF section very quickly. As I mentioned
late last year I managed to find an O320 H2AD (TT1950) with good
compressions for $AUS4500 including mag, starter carby.
Rick last week struck a great deal with me for $AUS3500; engine mount/ring,
complete cowl assembly, nose bowl, engine baffling, oil cooler, complete
cross over s/s exhaust including cabin heat muff & carby heat muff, a metal
sensenich 74inch propellor(4hrs smoh), 2 & 1/2 inch prop extension, a
spinner, vaccuun pump, plus a whole lot of other bits and pieces including a
primer & thottle cables. So I owe Rick one!!!
Apart from business and building, I am still managing to fly quite a bit in
my Tomahawk. I am planning a 40 hour trip(about 3200 miles) in June flying
coastal from Sydney to Cape York(the northern tip of Australia) and thence
returning down through the middle of outback Queensland.
So I am hoping to "pull my finger out" and maybe complete the wings this
year.
