BlankHi guys,

What are you fellows doing for door latch systems on the SR/Moose?
Don't know if the Rebel and Elite use similar systems, but I'm thinking
there's something better than a piece of cable that you yank on. I've
seen what the 'seaplane' doors are using, but looks pretty heavy.
Alternative ideas?

Hi Bill,

Randy and I have been looking for a door latch for some time now and have
decided to try and make the following work.

With the addition of some interior linkage we think it will be a good set up
for us. The latches are HEAVY, we will try to reduce some of the weight with
lightning holes in the structure.

We will be installing three all keyed alike. I like the fact that you can
leave them unlocked. I am not a big fan of locking things when not needed.

We are a few weeks from installation and will be glad to get back to the
group with some pictures when all is sorted out.

if you look at pics on rebel builders site under rebel-miscellaneous and
gull wing door (about 17) you will see a paddle exterior door handle and
interior crank handle, and center bell crank, although not 100% complete it
works great and is not much weight, little fine tuning and should be perfect
and best of all it fits inside depth of the rebel door (5/8" tube)

Understand your point about the convenience/utility of the cable system. Gotta agree that the K.I.S. approach is sometimes the best, for a lot of reasons. Been telling myself all along to just build the thing and don't try to 'improve' it. Therefore, instead of riveting all the door tube pieces together, I welded them. VERY rigid and stable. Came out real nice. If anyone is considering doing this, I'd recommend it. Just figured I'd look at 'improved' latch systems. All the suggestions look great. Kinda my impression that an improved latch is something that could be easily retrofitted. Probably ought to take my own advice and just build it, huh? 'Improve' it later. We'll see. You've just witnessed an example of me, writing to myself.... Now, if I'd only heed my advice.

Hi Bill !

For at least 4 years, I had an amphib Rebel with a wire running
from the front to back of the door, about 1" - 2" down from the top,
covered with a piece of clear fuel line. It sat on top of the
upholstered door panel, and was extremely easy to use !

When arriving on the water, if anything went wrong, I didn't
have to worry about finding & pulling any fancy handle - just swipe
anywhere along the top part of the door, pull down, and I was out !!
Maybe not too pretty, but it worked well ....

Another advantage of the cable release is it's easy to reach from
the front OR back seats - someone in the rear seats might want to open the
door (perhaps on the passenger side), without having to stand up &
lean forward to reach the front latch ... That's a BIG airplane,
and it's a LONG way forward !! :-)

The Factory Moose used the inside handle from a Mazda from
a wreckers. These plastic handles were very nice, light, and mounted
recessed into the door panels. They pulled on a small threaded rod
with hex nuts to operate the mechanism. This was a MAJOR pain, as
the rod would rotate, and the nuts would fall off - ouch ! Then
you couldn't get in or out, and you had to dis-assemble the door
to fix it !! That airplane also had a paddle handle near the
front of the door on the outside - NOT a good place for a latch
handle - put it near the BACK of the door on the outside, so
pulling helps open the door. ;-)

Spaenaur have lots of different latches and handles, some
with locks, as well as tons of other useful stuff for airplanes,
like rubber edge trim in many shapes, etc. They're here in
Kitchener, Ontario, but likely have US outlets, too ...

The catalogue is a couple of inches thick !!
There's a couple of back-to-back paddle latches that look very
Cessna-ish ... ;-)

I did look at your pics. Appears that you did a lot of thinking about this
system and did a great job. Thanks so much for posting the pics for all our
benefit. Yours is closest to what I'm imagining to be a good system. Looks

Glad I'm not the only one who 'writes/talks' to himself !!
I have the same problem - trying to do what I tell myself ... ;-) :-)

Blair Singer has a system to help with that - he calls it
the "LVMS" - Little Voice Management System. ;-) Whenever I have a
problem with that little voice that says 'change this, improve that',
I have to remind it that the object was to Get Flying, not build
"the perfect airplane" !! :-) :-)

Sounds like you're doing a great job !

I have both a handle and a cable on my Super Rebel. Instead of merely
hooking the cable to a fixed point at the front of the door I fashioned a
simple handle out of a piece of angle aluminum (1 x 1 I think). I held the
angle against the door with a bolt about which the angle pivots. The cable
is hooked to the angle. It's hard to describe in words (I'll post a
picture), but you can either reach forward and push down on the angle or you
can grab the cable to open the door.

Not that I am suggesting the wire approach is bad, but I did find some nice
handles from Wag Aero that are a flush mount externally (like the C-182
handles) and they were easy to install. The WAG part number is M-242-000.
Cost is $56 each.

For at least 4 years, I had an amphib Rebel with a wire running
from the front to back of the door, about 1" - 2" down from the top,

door (perhaps on the passenger side), without having to stand up &
lean forward to reach the front latch ... That's a BIG airplane,
and it's a LONG way forward !! :-)

The Factory Moose used the inside handle from a Mazda from
a wreckers. These plastic handles were very nice, light, and mounted
recessed into the door panels. They pulled on a small threaded rod
with hex nuts to operate the mechanism. This was a MAJOR pain, as
the rod would rotate, and the nuts would fall off - ouch ! Then
you couldn't get in or out, and you had to dis-assemble the door
to fix it !! That airplane also had a paddle handle near the
front of the door on the outside - NOT a good place for a latch
handle - put it near the BACK of the door on the outside, so
pulling helps open the door. ;-)

Spaenaur have lots of different latches and handles, some
with locks, as well as tons of other useful stuff for airplanes,
like rubber edge trim in many shapes, etc. They're here in
Kitchener, Ontario, but likely have US outlets, too ...

The catalogue is a couple of inches thick !!
There's a couple of back-to-back paddle latches that look very
Cessna-ish ... ;-)

I did look at your pics. Appears that you did a lot of thinking about this

I've looked at that latch, but couldn't get a handle on how it's made. (get
it: get a handle on the latch......) If you'd post a couple of pics of the
inside of your installation, I for one, would sincerely appreciate it!
