Skylight Sealant

Al,

I am planning on using clear Lexel. It's available at Ace Hardware stores in
the US. This is a general indoor/outdoor sealant described as super-elastic,
mildew resistant, 19 times clearer than silicon, and paintable.

Skylight Sealant

Post by Bob Patterson » Sat Feb 18, 2012 8:52 am

Hi Al !

The factory uses Bostick 1100 adhesive - comes in black,
white, grey, and ??? .... It's the same stuff they use for
windshields - comes in caulking gun tubes. I've used it with
good success on 2 Rebels, so far.

Possibly available from building supply stores ...
Other suppliers are in the US - LP Aero Plastics in Pennsylvania
is one. Sorry, don't have any nearby, but I think Jack W. might
know of one near Hamilton.

I used the urathane stuff recomended by murphy for my windsheild and I'm
not very happy with it. The stuff never sets up and continues to squeeze
out from the edges years later. Sikaflex A1 probably would work well.

Wayne G. O'Shea

Skylight Sealant

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 8:52 am

I still insist that the butyl tape rolls the windshield shops use for boats
etc is the way to go FOR THE WINDSHIELD. I buy it in rolls of about 25' for
$5 from my local Apple franchise. Just can't envision using that caulking
tube of Bostik as it will be all over the place before you are done, and
like Drew says continue to squeeze out on things years after the fact. The
tape I use oozes out lightly over time as well, when parked in the sun, to
give a really nice seal around the lip retainer. The difference is this
excess can simply be rolled off in a ball on a cool day. Also allows for
pretty easy windshield replacement as you can roll the stuff off the
retainer lip, side posts, cabin top etc. Can't imagine trying to get that
Bostik off to get a fresh start with a clean retainer etc for a replacement
windshield.

For the skylight windows I used to use Bathroom clear silicon as it has
fungicide in it. Never had any problems with this, other than getting paint
to stick around the very edge of the skylights, since you can't get the
silicon residue out of the alum pours well enough without crazing the Lexan
or Acrylic with the cleaning chemicals. After the first Rebel I took to
leaving all windows/skylights out for painting and then riveted them in
after the paint job is done. Requires hand painting or airbrushing of the
rivet heads but a lot better than over sprayed and/or crazed new "glass".
Also do the same thing with the door windows, painting the frames and then
installing the Lexan and painting the retainers with the glass taped off
tight for a cleaner looking window than having bare alum staring back at you
here and there.

Lately for the skylights I have been using a Dow Corning product that is
pretty close to clear for a nice clean look(nothing uglier than black sealer
all over the cabin roof!! epecially when not using a headliner to hide the
mess). Seals really well, fast curing and easy clean up. RTV Sealant 737
Neutral Cure Sealant - 100% Silicon Rubber - non corrosive to substrates -
fast cure - extreme temperature performance -Applications: Adhering of Auto
Trim - formed in place gaskets for compressors, pumps, gear boxes - sealing
of electrical equipment etc.

Skylight Sealant

I should add that I would still be using Bathroom Clear Silicon if I hadn't
of come into possession of two cases of the Dow 737 from a light
manufacturer we were moulding parts for... that we seized all their finished
inventory and equipment for failure to pay for services a while back. Wayne

klehman

Skylight Sealant

Post by klehman » Sat Feb 18, 2012 8:52 am

I was talking with a young LP rep (our windshield manufacturer) awhile
ago. He said that he would not really recommend Bostick 1100 because
they occasionally had problems with it. He was vague about the problems
though and was not familiar with how the windshield mounted on a Rebel.
I have never used the product but I was hesitant to give him too much
credibility, especially since several people here have recommended it.

I did pick up some butyl 3M strip caulk (Spruce pn08578) though that I
was thinking of trying. I have not been happy with the butyl rubber used
on commercial acrylic installations though as it also rolls out of the
joint after a couple of years of daily heating and cooling cycles. Less
of a problem if no direct sunlight is involved. It oozes first but
eventually most of it rolls out since the plastic expands and contracts
much more than glass or aluminum with temperature changes. For non
airplane use where a thick bead can be used, I now use an rtv type
silicone caulk that can expand and contract +/- 50% of the joint
thickness. That is pretty good for a silicone but notice that it is a
percent of joint thickness. If you squeeze the stuff between plastic and
aluminum and get a 0.010 thick layer of silicone, it doesn't allow much
movement. I can see lack of movement being a problem (crazing or
cracking) on a windshield especially between the wing roots where the
windshield is fairly flat and can't flex. Anyway I'm listening to all
comments but will likely try the silicone on the skylights and the strip
caulk on the windshield as it stands now. I think that is pretty much
the same thing that Wayne recommended as well...

If sikaflex 1A sticks like the one part urethane caulk that I use around
swimming pools, it might be rather difficult to remove in addition to
restricting movement on a windshield. Probably fine for skylights.
