Warp Drive prop

Post by Jerry Purdom » Sat Feb 18, 2012 12:04 am

Hi clay I have Warp Drive 4 blade prop,I have had two blades with hair line
crack on sleeve, when I phoned Darrell at Warp Drive he said to continual
flying and he would send me two new blades. He also said not to idle engine
down for long period of time, keep rpm. up to approx. 1000. I have my Warp
Drive on a 0-360 in my Rebel on edo 2000 floats, the crack appeared at about
300 hrs. I have about 400 hrs now and the two oldest blades have not cracked
and the two new ones are fine so far, approx. 100 hrs. on two blades. I
talked to Darrell on Friday Nov. 28 and he said he has not seen any
delaminating. I hope this helps a little

THANKS
jerry

I can't remember hearing of a Warp Drive blade failure (de-laminating)
on a 150 hp Lycoming. I thought it was only the higher compression 160
hp version ... Is that still correct today?
Are many of you still flying the 150 hp Warp Drive combo?

Thanks,
Clay

Warp Drive prop

Ditto with me. I never did have any cracks on my Warp on my 150
hp, but then my hours weren't that high either. One of the locals
here, has used his and still does, several hundred hours after
the cracks first appeared on the aluminum collars, and believes
they are not a problem. The Warp was definitely a good performer,
and it was nice to be able to ground adjust it for cruise or
climb. I will use it again when I am on wheels.

Clay, they have never delaminated or really even
failed for that matter on
even the 160's! What happens is the thin aluminum
"over moulding" at the
blade root cracks (from what I can only describe as
imagine taking a round
rod and rolling it around and around inside a pipe and
sooner or later it
flares out and cracks) and in some cases like Ron
Hamson's the cracked alum
pieces even fall off inside the spinner. I suspect
that this really has no
structural compromise and is just a "fear of failure"
problem!! :o((.

I have been running my 70" x 3 blade for 8 years, and
about 400 hrs, without
any problems on both my 100HP O-235 and 150Hp O-320,
but being on a private
grass strip I am very rarely below 1400 RPM and start
taxing immediately
after start up. I have heard of only >ONE< 70" on a
150HP cracking and only
ONE< 72" on a 150 Hp cracking. Have lost count of the
# of 160HP engines
that have cracked 72" props hub overmouldings.

Cheers,
Wayne

Warp Drive prop

No cracks in my 70" prop in front of an 0-290D. Is anyone using the 70"
with a 160hp. engine?
