Not beer, Wayne...I'm thinking volts ( this time). Does anyone on the list have any preference to building a plane
at 12 or 24 volts? Any drawbacks or advantages of either besides the occasional boost from a 12 v car? Thanks.

Beer, what's that!??!

Like you say the problem with 24v is when the battery goes dead you can't
quickly throw some cables, or a charge on it. Our UTVA's are 24 volts and
can be a pain, the only thing that made it a little better is that we used
two 12v batteries (for a $120 instead of the $360 price of a 24v battery
that size) in series in the box, so you can charge them with a normal
charger after disconnecting the series link. Also consider the ease of
obtaining 12volt radios and the likes easier than 24/28v stuff.

Well, If you are considering used radios, it seems that you can buy 24 volt
equipment an much better prices than 12 radios. They are also generally much
more available. You can also use smaller gage wiring throughout as the
current is less for all equipment. The disadvantage is as you said in
jumping as well as if you need a wing tip lamp at a local FBO then 12 volt
is more common. We have become used to 24 volt systems in all the eastern
block aircraft I deal with. As Wayne said we use a pair of 12 V. gel cells
in series. Sometimes to jumper i have used two cars in series and an extra
set of jumpers. (usually on our Baron)
