Murphy group,
Yesterday while lowering the gear on Rebel 295RT (amphibious), the pump
failed.
After several pumps, (the mains did lower) the presure went to zero, and
there was no resistance to pumping.
I landed on the grass next to the rumway causing no damage other than some
paint removal on the bottom of the floats.
I was able to extend the front gears by hand and then lock them in place.
What is the best procedure (do's and don'ts}, to repair the pump?
Also, I have a lycoming 160 hp that has a oil capacity of only 6 quarts.
Even though I have low cyl temps, and no leaks to the oil cooler, I have
high oil temps (215-220 F @ 80 F). Any suggestions?

Dale, thanks for letting us know about this failure.
Happy to hear you had a safe landing and there was no
damage.
I, too, will be very interested in exactly what failed.
Sudden failure without warning is not good. Perhaps you
will identify something that we need to check or
replace periodically before that happens.
Also, how many hours did you have on the amphibs before
this happened? And anything else that might be
pertinent.
On the oil, while my stick says 8, I fill to 6, and add
when it gets down to 5. Never tried 7, but have been
warned, too, about it blowing out the breather. I have
my oil cooler on the rear baffle, and actually have the
opposite problem of running too cool and having to
block airflow, except on the very hottest summer days.
Lycoming says max oil temperature is 245. As Wayne
alludes, you want it hot enough at least on climb to
get rid of moisture.

temps are cool for what mine runs on an
average day. Once you have an extra
quart or two of oil your temps may come down

hours, so I just originally fill to
7 qts and add one when it gets down to 6QTS
10 or 12 hours later!
