Alex,
I bought one of the first SR's in May of 97 (s/n #025). Since that time I
have been working on the plane along with my father on evenings and
weekends. I would agree with your comment that the Murphy group is running
a first class operation. They have been extremely helpful and generous
throughout the process. I would assume no other SR's are flying yet simply
because the complete kit has not been available for too long and a plane
this large takes some time to build. I can attest that there have been no
significant problems with the Murphy package that have delayed my
construction to any great extent. Just lots of holes to deburr and a lot of
metal to clean and prime.
While I was wary of purchasing on of the first editions of a new airplane, I
have been very happy with the way all has gone together. I have my wings
and tail surfaces complete, and the fuselage is nearing completion. I have
the doors hung, the engine mount on, and am attempting to complete
proverbial last 10% which as advertised, is taking 90% of the effort. I had
planned to fly the plane this fall but if the Alaskan cold and dark gets
here before I am ready, I will spend the winter finishing the instrument
panel and interior details. I hope to fit the wings in the next month, tie
in the ailerons, flaps, fuel lines and electrical, and then take the wings
back off and put the fuselage back in the garage for instrument work.
I have also delayed my completion date by adding custom details such as
landing and taxi lights in both wings, a Beaver type heated pitot tube, and
other such details which add a lot of time to the construction. Lastly I
have a child due in a couple of weeks so that will slow me down a little (or
so I am told). I am using a Lycoming O-540 and the Hartzell 3 blade
propeller.
Also, if anyone has advice on painting an all metal plane of this size I'd
be interested in hearing the details. It sounds like the options are either
paying a healthy chunk of cash to let the professionals do the work or doing
it yourself. Doing it myself, I am concerned with both control and disposal
of etching wastewater, keeping from damaging too many brain cells with
toxic and explosive fumes and also doing a good job.

Hi Murphy builders,
My name is Alex Russell. I Flew the prototype SR2500 at Arlington WA
in 1995.
I have promoted that airplane for four years and continue to do so.
I have
made several trips to the factory in Canada to fly the airplane
again. Robin
Dyck and all the Murphy staff are a first class operation. Since
then I have
been in constant contact with the Murphy people and tried to find
out why
such a good airplane is not flying in the numbers that the Rebel is.
They
have been very helpful in answering my questions and are eager to
get more
planes in the air.
In my effort to help this process,I'm asking any SR2500 builders to
reply to
me their thoughts and suggestions to let the kit builders know what
a great
airplane thi is. I do not work for Murphy. I have been flying all
types of
airplanes for 45 years all over the world I and don't want to see a
plane of
this performance go by the wayside because of lack of information .
So I'm asking any kit builders out there "Why aer'nt your airplanes
flying
after the kit was available in 1995? "
I saw the second factory built SR2500 at the factory in BC before it
was
painted and later in it's beautiful paint job at Oshkosh. Darryl
Murphy and
his team really know what they are doing.
I have been aware of the different engine desires if many builders
even since
Arlington in 1995. At OSH I saw a picture of a SR2500 from a
builder in Ont
Canada with an M14 P radial. That's the only flying kit SR2500 I
know of .
Does any one know of any others? Tomorrow I'm off to Homer Alaska
to see my
friend John Farmer who has a full time team working on a plane. My
intent in
this inquiry is to get all the information I can get to build
several
SR2500's for myself , my flying family and the pilots who know the
C185 and
C206 and to show them the SR 2500 can do it better and more
economical.
All responses welcomed,
Alex Russell
