Exhaust cracks

Post by Walter Klatt » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:15 pm

Alister, you mention the "new" system for supporting
the exhaust. Can you describe it a bit more for me,
please? Do you have any pics or diagrams? Currently, I
have mine supported from the motor mount with a
flexible hanger made from old hose material. It seems
to work OK for the left side, but obviously not for the
right. I did look at mounting it to the engine somehow,
but couldn't come up with a suitable solution.

Angus, sounds like you had the same problem as I have
with that exhaust. Let us know how the new one turns
out.

Hi Walter,
A thought on your exhaust
problems, my old exhaust system
cracked in the same place more than once, it
only came right after I put the
new system in they now use to support the
exhaust ( it all hangs off the
back of the engine ).

Do you have this? Mine is really good now.(
and I didn't have to buy the SS
system)

Yup, tried that, but that's not it.

My first step is to relocate the noise
filter back to
the alternator and see if that helps. I
started that
last night and should finish tonight, so
will try it
again this weekend. Got a gang of people out at our
cottage again this weekend, so it will be busy.

When I was under the cowl, I noticed a
couple of tiny
cracks starting again on my right exhaust pipe near
where the cross-over joins. Same one as I
got welded
last year near the same spot. So I will have to get
that fixed again before my upcoming trips.
I got the
old, old mild steel exhausts that MAM used
to sell many
years ago. Looks like I may have to spring
for the new
stainless ones that all you guys now have. With the
rising loonie, I'm hoping the price will
drop a bit.
What next? Why couldn't these problems
show up a few
months ago. Oh well, better now than when I'm 1000
miles from home.

Exhaust cracks

Post by Walter Klatt » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:15 pm

OK, I was down at my hanger and looking how I can mount
a hanger to my engine. The rear exhaust pipe on the
right side (#3) is forward of the intake, so attaching
a clamp there won't work. However, I did clamp a
galvanized strap to the bottom of my intake tube just
before the rubber connection into the sump. Hopefully
it is OK to mount there. I clamped the other end of the
strap to the side of the exhaust pipe right behind the
heat muff. I would have preferred the top of the pipe
instead of the side, but there wasn't room. There was
no way that I could see to attach the strap to any sump
bolts. These pipes are fairly wide apart. Even the
strap from the intake to the side of the exhaust is at
quite an angle. Anyway, it is attached to the engine
now, and appears to be quite solid, so will see how
this works.

Thanks for the explanation, Wayne. It gave me the idea
to attach to the intake tube.

Walter, you need to mount the hangers back
to the engine. Mounting them to
the engine mount or fuselage just adds to
the twisting etc when the motor is
bobbing around (and the mount is, hopefully,
not!). Mounting directly to the
engine lets it all shake together in unison!

On Howard's all I did was use two muffler
clamps and a metal strap between
them. His was a problematic left side. All I
did was put a muffler clamp on
the rear left stack just below the EGT probe
with the bolts sticking outward
and another clamp on the exhaust pipe with a
one inch wide galvanized strap
between them (used and old lock plate for
duct work and it's still there 6+
years later). Just drill the strap to fit
the clamp bolts and add a nut top
and bottom.

Another option would be to use the rear
bolts in the sump to attach a heavy
strap to down to the exhaust and attach with
a clamp (muffler or worm gear).
SOLID, not rubber strap!

Exhaust cracks

Post by Walter Klatt » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:15 pm

Thanks Alister, I think now I can picture how you did
it. See my previous message to Wayne, on how I attached
the right side to the engine. I still don't have the
left side done that way, but will look at it, too. That
side hasn't given me a problem so far, but I would like
to fix it properly as well. Then as per your
suggestion, I will also look at joining the two pipes
to each other. So hopefully, that will be the end of
it. Thanks again for the help.

Hi Again Walter,
I say 'new system"
but maybe it is not! All I did
was use the plans of a new SS system a
friend was putting on his Rebel.

That System uses a short lengths of round
tube clamped or bolted to the rear
pipe and the rear of the engine with quite
thick walled rubber type pipe
slid over both ends of the tube and joining
them together, the pipe is held
on to the tubes with a hose clips.( I found
the hose clip slipped sometimes,
so I drilled a hole through the pipe and
tube and put a rivet in--- end of
problem)

You have three of these things, one on each
side to the tail pipes and one
across from one tail pipe to the other. (
very important they say).

As Wayne says, don't hang it off the engine
mount or fuse, make sure it
comes off the engine itself so they all
shake around together at the same
time!

Cheers
