Has anyone tried or heard of anyone experimenting with the Swiss style
muffler system on an engine as large as an O-320?

I've been looking at it with interest. Main concern was how to insure that it
stays on. Don't know anyone that's done it. later

swiss muffler

Mounting should not be difficult. For a Rebel one can run 2"+ bolt(s)
down through the cage for a forward mount.

For the rear mount the Rebel has the double bunkhead at the conventional
gear drag strut mounting points. Inside the cabin one could lay a 3"
long aluminum strap (0.187 x 1" bar?) or angle across the double
bulkhead and then insert a long bolt down through the strap and out the
fuselage bottom. I'd suggest two bolts a couple of inches apart
sideways. I looked at incorporating hardpoints there before I closed but
decided to do it that way.

swiss muffler

Post by paco » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:08 pm

Hope this can help.
I started flying with gliders, so for me, quieter is better!

I have installed a 36" swiss muffler on 0145R and is working well so far!
Very quiet on the ground and in flight. Just one word of warning, the swiss
muffler can be made with an aluminum outer shell that is seamed together. If
the engine you are using has large exhaust pulses, and the muffler attached to
solid to the exhaust, it can split the seam open.
I gained 150RPM static when I switched from a single SuperTrapp to the
Swiss so I guess the EA-81 was asking for a bit more back pressure. I didn't
drop bolts through the floor, I installed a 4"x6" 1/8" thick aluminum plate to
the underside of the aircraft and used 2 timing belt rubber straps for
vibration damping at rear. On the front I installed a rather expensive
stainless braided flex coupling from the local autoparts store. You have to
ensure that the engine exhaust and Swiss muffler have plenty of flex between
them or it will rip the Swiss Muffler to bits. I can send pic's if you are
interested.

You are very right,
The Swiss Muffler is nothing more than a light-weight "Cherry Bomb" I have
two of these installed on my dune buggy and they cut down the noise about the
same. I never realized how much noise those Facett fuel pumps make till I flew
with the Swiss Muffler. With both of them on, they drive you nuts! Mostly prop
noise now and at 1600 rpm, that's not a significant amount of noise either!
I think the real important thing here is the use of a flexible exhaust
coupling.

If it would stop raining in Southern Ontario I could do some flying, at which
time I will take a couple of Muffler pic's and send them in.
