My V8 installation questions
My V8 installation questions
THANK YOU EVERYONE!
The feedback was great. I have been convinced to get rid of the magneto and
get a nice dual electronic ignition setup. And if I understood the feedback
it sounds like even though all the Prop Tip Calculator sites I visited say
that to get max thrust you need a max prop tip speed between .88 and .92
mach, something around .80 would be better for lower noise. Higher
efficiency was mentioned too but I don't understand that part. In any case
the 76" maximum diameter for the IVO prop turning the more normal 2700 max
RPM (versus the 3000 I mentioned based on prop tip calculator results) gives
me .80 mach at 60 degrees F, a little higher mach at lower temps and a
little lower at higher temps. Just about perfect for Fairbanks, AK. And I
won't overspeed the tip during winter flying. A 1.7 to 1 PSRU will give me
a max engine RPM of 4590. Also just about perfect. Using the electronic
prop constant speed control IVO offers allows me to choose from a wider
range of PSRUs because I don't need an accessory drive for a governor. It
also sounded like the consensus was for the 30-90" pitch range versus the
45-105" pitch range. I wish I understood that better. Guess I'll dig out
my old Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators book that we used in college, let's
see, 20+ years ago. Sorry BobP, I still want a carb. I like carbs.
Quirky, cantankerous, difficult to set up, but I understand them. And I
stand by my "no fuel returns, no pumps, no etc." position. More power to
you fuel injection folks. Homebuilder's motto - "To each his own." By the
way, I have a metering plate made by Tom McNeil that fits Holley carbs that
has a rotating shaft with strategically placed slots that replaces the jets
and gives me cockpit control of mixture. Hope it works. It's a nice piece
of machining and I see no reason why it shouldn't.
Now to pick a PSRU, design a cooling system, make an engine mount...SIGH!
Wish I could go flying tomorrow.

Food for thought.... Engine mount... The guys that build custom bicycle

take large impact loading. I am going to contact one here in the Denver

My V8 installation questions
Rick
This is just a headsup offlist but I think bicycles are often brazed
which can be just as strong as welding. However there is a bit of
controversy where for example Richard Finch in "Performance Welding"
says that 4130 steel should never be brazed with any copper or bronze
based brazing material as it will lead to cracks. I think silver or
nickel based braze might be OK although more expensive. Anyway unless
you can find out for sure you might want to lean towards conventional
gas or TIG welding with mild steel rod. Some guys use heat treatable
filler rod but that seems pointless unless you actually heat treat the
finished engine mount. I gas welded mine with mild rod and it's not real
pretty but it's strong.

Don't I know it! I don't know how many times I've had the thought that I
should just go with the Lycoming and get flying. Then I'd always wonder
what might have been. It's too late now. I've got a table full of parts,
and the block and heads are paid for. I'm on my way now. And I'm excited
about it. But I still wish I could go flying.

My V8 installation questions
Seems no matter what you do there is always something Mike, so carry on with
your plan!!
Just got a call from Jim Like up in Timmins, that I sold a fresh O-320 x
160HP wide deck to last month. Installation complete (after the removal of
his O-290 from the Rebel) and instead of running it up on land first, they
put it in the River as they rushed to get the test flight in and then they
wanted to head off to the booneys to go fishing (wise ??)! Anyhow he hit the
starter and the brand new LAMAR starter turns backwards!! Needless to say
he's pissed, I'm pissed and not much I can do for him at 8pm on a Friday of
a long weekend!
I'm going to be out Purolator charges both ways to Timmins (but that's the
joy of running a business) to ship the defective starter back and a new
Skytec up on Tuesday, if hopefully Canadian Aero has one in stock to sell
and ship "third person". Wouldn't be too bad if he could at least hand swing
it, but the bendix stays out on the lamars and needs enough speed after
start to throw them back in. Not going to happen with her turning the wrong
way. Anyone got a twin and need a new starter for your left turning
engine!??
Have a good weekend as you plan how to assemble your engine puzzle!
Wayne

Skytec up on Tuesday, if hopefully Canadian Aero has one in stock to sell
and ship "third person". Wouldn't be too bad if he could at least hand swing
it, but the bendix stays out on the lamars and needs enough speed after
start to throw them back in. Not going to happen with her turning the wrong
way. Anyone got a twin and need a new starter for your left turning
engine!??
Have a good weekend as you plan how to assemble your engine puzzle!

mount...SIGH!Don't I know it!

My V8 installation questions
just think though the weeks you spend planning and getting your V-8 to work
will equal out in years as far an enginering goes. The cost in auto VS avgas
the fact of never worrying about mixture.............. bla bla bla.......
building does have it's advantages.....
