Elite Trim Hinge

Hi Jeffrey,
Well, here is what we did to our demo plane.
We indeed did install the hinge facing down. We then cut a slot in the outer
tip rib, and drilled a hole in the inboard tip rib in line with the pin. The
pin was left longer, pokes through this hole, and is positively locked
inside. The other end can't move because it buts up to the elevator main
rib.
We put a small cover over the slot, and if we want to remove the pin we take
the cover off, and pull the pin out through it.
Try lubricating, chucking the pin in a drill and running it in and out a few
times.

Alan,
We had the same question and riveted the hinge so the barrel is proud of
the elevator/trim surface. That does mean that the pin can conceivably
walk. My plan is to put a small 90 degree bend on one end and keep an
eye on it for any movement at all. If there is the slightest travel the
pin will be pulled and cross drilled opposite the 90 and a loop of
safety wire inserted. That will show it who's boss!

Hi Ralph !

Might be safer/easier to just bend the wire on the inboard
end and put a small alum. strap over it - couple of rivets, and
you're done ! That would tie it down to the outside of the
inboard rib...

What I wound up doing is pretty close to what Brian suggested below. When I
tried to remove the hinge pin, it was crimped in one of the hinge sections,
and when I chucked it in the drill to get it out, it broke. So, I got a
piece of 0.090" piano wire and made it long enough to reach all the way to
the tip rib with a 1/2" right angle bend at the end. I drilled a hole in
the #2 rib to pass the hinge pin through. I then riveted a single section
of hinge to the inside of the tip rib, which receives the bent end of the
hinge pin. A small slot (3/4" x 3/8") in the tip rib gives access to the
hinge pin for removal. Safety wire makes sure it doesn't move around. A
small cover finishes it off. Photos if anybody is interested..
