Airspeed Pitot

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:59 pm

Hi Rick !

I like the cost of your pitot tube - about the same as
mine !! ;-)

The best one I've had was an aluminum tube about 18" long,
5/16" ID, mounted on the left wing, about 3" down on alum. straps,
below the wing, just inboard of the strut. It did stick out
ahead of the wing, but not by much. This was a good spot,
as the plastic tube came off the back, and through the fairing
and down inside the strut ! Being inboard of the strut, it
was out of the way of heads & eyes ...

Airspeed Pitot

Actually Rick, It would have to come from me as I have Bob P's "old"
airplane in my hanger!!

I actually even put a long tube on it and I'll take one today and post it to
the archives.

It is subject to some head hitting and the place I found it really bad was
when on floats with the left wing over the fuel dock. Really easy to knock
it off when the wing is only about 3 feet above the dock.

IT READS REALLY GOOD THOUGH!!!

Two pictures posted to Rebel- Systems of the LONG pitot tube. I also posted
last night to Float Installations of the latest item installed to Howard's

one, BUT the customer is always right!!!

Airspeed Pitot

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:59 pm

Hi Rick !

Wayne has already posted a couple of good photos of
a variation on it. I think I would move it inboard & extend it back both
about 6" or so, and run the tubing into the back of the strut fairing....,
but this is a simple, clean installation ! In the 2nd photo,
you can see the alum. straps used for support -
in the Murphy tradition, "Simple, Light, and Strong !" ;-)

Our "previous, previous" Rebel, the original prototype,
had a very similar setup. The larger ID tube worked best over
the wide range of angles the Rebel loves ! (5/16" I.D. or more ...)

Airspeed Pitot

Post by Alan Hepburn » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:59 pm

I purchased the Murphy pitot, but can't see how the static can work properly
when it just samples the air around the pitot head. Also, it is not heated,
of course, and is susceptible to damage. So I bought a used C150 pitot for
$150 Cdn and plan to locate it more or less where Cessna does, with static
vents on each side of the rear fuselage. However, no reports on how well it
works yet, since I'm only about 50% complete.

I've got the murphy pitot installed on my plane and it works just fine.
It's been bumped and banged a few times with no damage. No it's not heated
but I also don't have a heated windsheild, deice boots on the wings or
glycol weeping onto my prop. Most rebels are flown VFR only and don't need
any added complexity. I'm not sure that your rear fuselage is the best
place for your static ports because it's a low pressure area. Doesn't
cessna put them in front of the doors.

Post by George Coy » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:59 pm

Hey Guys, as long as I am into this eastern block stuff, I am using one of
their heated pitot heads and tubes. It will stick out of the left wing about
30 inches. It has the static holes as well as the pitot port. It will look
like the old C-195 set up. They are common on almost all of the eastern
block aircraft. The heaters are 24 volt and since I am putting a 24 volt
system in my SR it will work fine. That said, I have the Murphy supplied
head for sale.

By the way, I have a good deal available on a first overhauled 400 hp M14P
with a new engine warranty. It will be complete with electric start,
Sytronics 50 amp alternator, western prop flange, western fluid fittings,
dress kit, spares kit and tool kit. The overhaul and conversion to 400 hp
was done at the manufacturer.

I purchased the Murphy pitot, but can't see how the static can work
properly
when it just samples the air around the pitot head. Also, it is not
heated,
of course, and is susceptible to damage. So I bought a used C150
pitot for
$150 Cdn and plan to locate it more or less where Cessna does, with
static
vents on each side of the rear fuselage. However, no reports on how
well it
works yet, since I'm only about 50% complete.

Al

I used the mam supplied pitot/static tube which is mounted on the
left
wing
at the strut attach point. The lines run down the strut and into the
cockpit. The pitot tube sticks out about a foot in front of the
wing. I
questioned whether or not this was the best thing to do. Well it is
pure
Murphy. I think also that it may take a beeting being right at head
height
as you walk in front of the wing. Other builders have mounted a
pitot/static
under the wing which is probably a better idea.

As for your idea of getting it into cleaan air, I can't realy
comment on
how
far away from the fuselodge it should be.

Good Luck
Murray
