I will start building my Rebel in august (order have been send last week to
mam) and read all the e:mail with interest. Many builder I think have use 0-
235 and 0-320 with success and it is probably a very good choice. does
someone know about Franklin O-240, 125 hp, 4 cylinders? They use same engine
mount as the O-200 Continental. Do you know if mam (or someone else)
manufacture engine mount/cowling for those or for O-200? The price is good
and 125 hp sounds good. Reliability? I know that their 6 cylinder run very
quiet without vibration... Excuse my english, I do my best....

Franklin engine
Franklin engine
Jean,
I purchased the Continental engine mount for my Rebel (still under
construction) from Murphy Aircraft. As yet I have not made a firm decision
whether to mount the Continental IO-240, or the Franklin 4A-235. I am leaning
toward the IO-240. As you point out, both are rated at 125HP. I'm told by the
Franklin dealer that the 4A-235's horsepower can be increased to 145HP by
swapping pistons for those from the Franklin 6A-350 engine. The dealer pointed
out to me that this is not a factory authorized modification and would
invalidate any warranty. However the thought still appeals to me.
Chuck Bailey has a Rebel flying with the Franklin 4A-235 engine. He has told
me that he likes the setup. He purchased his engine mount from MAM and
subsequenly had to modify it for the rear mounted engine alternator to fit. I
think their may be some photos of the modification posted on Wray Thompsons
website. Try this URL: http://www.globalserve.net/~cobbg/reb176.html
I have heard of another Rebel builder in Washington State who has installed
the Franklin engine. He was reportedly near completion, but I have not heard
anything further.
Steve Sloan has the Continental IO-240 in his Rebel which is now equipped with
amphibious floats. He has pictures posted in the file archives of this list
(with performance data), on Murphy's website, Wray Thompson's website, and on
the Northwest Rebel Experimental Aircraft website at this URL:
http://beta.communities.msn.com/NWRebel ... t/homepage
There seem to be very few of these engines, either the Franklin or the
Continental IO-240, on the used market. I recently found an ad in Trade-a-
Plane for a low time IO-240. I turned it down when I found it came out of a
Diamond Katana that ran out of fuel, clipped a power line, hit the ground,
collapsed the nose wheel, and severed the fuselage just ahead of the vertical
stabilizer. That engine was being sold by Wentworth Aircraft.
Mattituck (http://www.mattituck.com/new/matt.html) is advertising new IO-240's
for experimental aircraft only for just under $17,000,00 USD.
Back in November Colleen advised me the 2002 cost of the Continental IO-240-
B4B engine was $19,800.00 USD (outright) if purchased through MAM.
Hey, it's just money!
Hope this helps.

Franklin engine
Jean,
My Rebel powered Franklin weight is 915 pounds (415 Kilograms), full panel
but only seats for interior. My prop is a Warp Drive 70 inch 3 blade square
tip. No Cracking of the prop so far, (140 hrs.). The Franklin is 8.5:1
Compression Ratio, but is a smooth running engine.
I cruise 110 to 115 MPH at 2400 rpm with at top speed of 135 MPH at 2000
feet MSL, Climb out of 800 to 1200 feet depending on loading.
I have a Continental IO-240 Speed cowl, but would not do that again. (Too
much modification) I would use a MAM or T-18 nose bowl and make the rest
from aluminum.
The motor mount modfication is to relocate the upper right firewall to lower
right engine mount.tube. I put a tube with a slight V, from the Upper right
to the Lower right Firewall mounts and the relocated tube moved from the V
to the lower right engine mount to clear the alternator.
See http://www.globalserve.net/~cobbg/reb176.html I can also send you more
pictures if needed.
Hope this helps.
