Hopefully more encouragement!
I talked to Wayne O'Shea from Midland, Ontario yesterday. Wayne is a
prolific Rebel Builder to say the least. In the last five years he
built one with an O-235, completed the firewall forward (O-320 I
believe) for another builder, rebuilt a Rebel that was almost written
off, completed a set of Murphy Amphibs. On Friday he flew his
ultralight Rebel for the first time (Gee... this isn't so inspirational
so far).
Wayne says performance wise it blows his Amateur Built 0-235 Rebel away
(the ultralight has a Rotax 912 and a GSC prop). He reports takeoff
distances consistently less than 200 feet. He has landed and stopped in
400 feet...on his grass strip! He is getting 700 fpm climb at just over
40 mph (solo). He reports that the stall is a non event, at about 35
mph indicated he has full aileron control but is sinking at about 400
fpm, just push the stick forward and you are flying again. It was
Tuesday and he still couldn't get the grin off his face.

That IS good news !!
If he thinks it's good now, just wait until he gets the 912 'broken in'
!!!
(It takes well over 200 Hr. !! :-) )
The climb would be better (and so would the visibility) if he let the
speed come up to about 65 mph ! We regularly see over 1,100 feet/min...
and 97 - 102 mph cruise!
It's particularly gratifying for ME !! See, guys - you really CAN
get great performance with a 912, and a LIGHT Rebel !!!!
Now - when are we going to hear about YOUR first flight, Dave ???? ;-)
You should have even BETTER performance, with those extra ponies !
Hope to see a few more of you at the next Rebel Builders Meeting -
Sunday, May 16th (moved to miss Mothers Day) !!
