Has anyone thought of putting in a Walter M601 into a Moose?

Seeing as the Beavers are being changed over to turbine power I was
wondering if this would be a viable option to power the Moose.

I've heard whispers of one!

However IMHO the SR/Moose sure doesn't need 600+HP, no matter how smooth it
is, and then there is the issue of how to store enormous amounts of fuel to
keep it making that sweet "noise" up front.

Cheers,
Wayne

Post by Mike Kimball » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:55 pm

Rob Merdes, here in Fairbanks, has a plan to convert to a turbine
eventually. He and I are putting in aluminum V8s initially. I will stay
with my V8 and Rob will convert to a turbine later. Of course, if a good
turbine deal pops up, he'll just bypass the V8 and go right to the turbine.
Long before there was a 120 gallon option on the Moose Rob set his wings up
to be almost completely wet except where there's stuff in the way like the
aileron push-pull tube. He has separate fuel lines for inboard and outboard
tanks that will feed to a manifold with individual shutoff valves prior to
where the fuel is joined. He is just using a left-right-both fuel selector
valve. The shutoff valves will normally all be left open unless there is an
emergency.

hi wayne,

i currently fly a rotax powered rans s-7 on full lotus floats. my
partner and i have just finished a christavia mk-1 with an 0-320. the
exhaust is basically straight dual pipes. my biggest concern for when
we finish our murphy 1800 amphibs is the huge increase in noise i will
make when i am leaving the small lakes here in northen michigan. the
0-320 is very very loud compared to the rotax. a turbine float plane is
really close to way too loud. i hate turbines on the taxiways of our
airport. they just scream. i would not subject lake property owners to
that noise regardless of the gain in performance. try to talk the guy
out of it unless you know a way to quiet them down.

I hear that ATP (www.atpcoinc.com) have plans to go beyond
their current 200 hp /185 lb. turbine. (Wouldn't THAT make an
exciting Rebel on amphibs !!!! :-) )

According to their test pilot, he's had it below 10 gph
at cruise, but 12 gph is no problem at all - it's only 16 gph
wide open !!! That makes standard tanks a viable option !

They think it can easily be increased to 350 hp. by re-doing
the hot section ....
maybe in a couple of years !

Seems like a better way to go than the Walter - less money
and better fuel economy ..... IF it all works out !!

I've had a prospective customer ask for a 200HP ATP on an Amphib Rebel
already! Will see how deep his pockets are when I put the airframe pieces
together and see if he's still in to go Turbine. Standard Rebel tanks will
give him about 3Hrs before it's o'shit time, so maybe an extra fuel bay
would be in order on each side! ;o))

You make some good points Andy, but does a Turbine really get any louder on
take off?? I know they are really annoying when taxing, as you leave her
spooled up pretty high and flatten the prop, but on take off are they not
usually quieter than most piston powered engines? More of a swooooouuush
sound than the ratatatat........... of pistons bangin TDC!

Before settling on the M14, I did some checking into turbines. The Walter
is inexpensive, but more power than the Moose needs. It's also thirsty and
weighs a bit. I considered an Allison 250 with the B17 gear box. There are
gobs of these things flying in helicopters around here (with the C20) and I
figured to pick up a mid time engine reasonably. Result was that I should
budget $80k for the engine alone. Hmmm, not as reasonable as I thought.
Then figure the prop, mount and start looking for place to put fuel. Then,
design and build a cowl system. I gotta admit that it would look sexy as
hell, with a long sleek nose. Sorta like a Pilatus PC-7 (I think??). The
Allison is not a noisy engine, either. At least not nearly as loud as a
Garrett. In the end, I just couldn't find the spunk or money to go that
route. If money were no object, I'd have a Maule turbine on Wiplines. I
did get a ride in a C206 amphib that had the Allison conversion. Impressive
does not come close to being a proper description of that performance.

Viable option? Hell yes. Just add $$$$$. :)

Mike:

You had said that Rob was wanting to go to a turbine at a latter date. Have
you or Rob talked to MAM about going this route?

I talked to Brian today and found that the Moose has a VNE of 189mph. Have
you guys given any thought about this. Also he said that the Moose was only
designed for 400HP.

The Walter will turn out 657 HP full bore and cruse at 350 / 400 HP. With
the sleek nose for the turbine do you believe the speed would go WAY above
the 189 VNE?

There is a complete firewall forward kit avail. for about 58K, that does not
include an engine rebuild for 18K. Aerocomp is offering the package for
their kits. The web site is
http://AEROCOMPinc.com if you or Rob are interested. We're going to look at
it but I haven't figured out yet if the Moose can handle it without a lot of
mods.

What do you or anyone else think about this? ? ? ? ?
Open for any suggestions. We're looking at it to get some faster speed for

He is just using a left-right-both fuel selector
valve. The shutoff valves will normally all be left open unless there is an
emergency.

Turbine

With regard to Rob's plans for his Moose I have very bad news to report.
Rob was in a car crash in Seattle and was very badly injured. He had a
living will that his wife decided to honor last night. By now Rob is gone.
We have lost an exceptional builder, and an exceptional man. I will respond
to the turbine questions at a later date.

Mike:

You had said that Rob was wanting to go to a turbine at a latter date.
Have
you or Rob talked to MAM about going this route?

I talked to Brian today and found that the Moose has a VNE of 189mph.
Have
you guys given any thought about this. Also he said that the Moose was
only
designed for 400HP.

The Walter will turn out 657 HP full bore and cruse at 350 / 400 HP. With
the sleek nose for the turbine do you believe the speed would go WAY above
the 189 VNE?

There is a complete firewall forward kit avail. for about 58K, that does
not
include an engine rebuild for 18K. Aerocomp is offering the package for
their kits. The web site is
http://AEROCOMPinc.com if you or Rob are interested. We're going to look
at
it but I haven't figured out yet if the Moose can handle it without a lot
of
mods.

What do you or anyone else think about this? ? ? ? ?
Open for any suggestions. We're looking at it to get some faster speed
for
cross country travel but still have the utility for dropping in where we

Turbine

Post by George Coy » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:56 pm

I have sold two Walter 601Z models (Z model is the version de-rated to 450
hp) complete with prop and the rest of the FWF from a Z37 Cmelak for $28K. I
do not know of any available just now. We had several Z37 airplanes complete
with times remaining on them for sale for $38K for a long time. They were
bought in New Zeeland finally. If anyone is seriously interested, let me
know and I will look for more.
