Rebel on floats

All you guys with a rebel on floats,

I'm building a hanger right now and want to know the height of the tail for a Rebel on floats. If I chose to later install amphibious floats, how high must the door be to clear the tail? Would 11.5 feet be sufficient? MAM is out on vacation for Thanks Giving (Canadian style) and was not available for an answer. Thanks

Bruce, here is my answer to that about a year and a half ago! Yes it's Thanksgiving today and the Turkey was great!!

Steve, the Rebel when mounted per MAM's instructions, as to height, has an
under wing clearance of 7'6" at the aileron horn and 7'8" at the wing tip.
The one I have on 1500's is maybe an inch lower. The tail fin will go
through a 10 foot opening with a bit of clearance and is the highest point
UNLESS you have roof mounted antennas, and then these become the highest
point that should still squeeze through a 10 foot door.

That was quick. We will set the post for the hanger tomorrow and this information is timely.

I'm glad you enjoyed your holiday. Us yanks have another 5 weeks before it's our turn to eat turkey.

I flew the 912 Kitfox for the first time in a 5 weeks this weekend (been having to much fun flying the Rebel) and had forgotten how smooth the engine was, or I've just gotten used to the vibration from the 0320. I think when I get the time flown off the Rebel so I'm legal to land at our towered controlled Felts Field, I'll have to stop in and make an appointment to have my prop dynamically balanced. I don't know what else it could be but and I think it should not have as much vibration as it does. What I really need is to fly in another 0320 so I have something to compare.

Bruce, when you shut down does your prop stop in the handswing postion?? If it doesn't why not pull it off and move it by one hole or what ever it takes to put it in the hand swing postion. Maybe this is all it needs to smooth things out. Then again I probably asked you this before!!!

Too bad I didn't see this note earlier in the weekend, as I was out to my hangar several times and could have taken some measurements. However, I do know that my door height is 11 feet and I have plenty of clearance. I have a word doc from MAM that shows all the float dimensions for the 1800 amphibs and standard Rebel installation which I can email you off list. Let me know if you want it. It shows the tail height at 10 feet.

No, my prop stops in the 4:00 position, much to my chagrin. I was sure I clocked it right but have been to lazy to change it.

If it is the prop/spinner that's out of balance, what effect would re-clocking it have? It would still be out of balance wouldn't it?

Might not do anything, but I was thinking that the prop location vs crank positon might be causing a slight vibration. Your prop was new so I suspect Sensenich would have balanced it before shipment, so maybe your engine has a rod or piston assembly that is a little heavier than the others. If you move the prop a hole to get it up in the hand swing position you might just be lucky enough to counter this small balance problem in the engine. If nothing else at least your prop will stop where it should, so it's ready to swing if you are stuck somewhere with a dead battery and the weathers closing in. Nothing worse than trying to hand swing when the compression happens with the propellor in the bottom half of the arc. Also it's much more dangerous as you end up bent down to swing it through.

If it stops in the 4:00 position maybe you could swing it by the other
blade :)
Seriously changing the position of the prop can make a difference because
of the way the total mass interacts.Even moving the prop 180 degrees can
make a difference. When I had my prop balanced all the weight needed was an
AN3 bolt, nut and washer on the flywheel it made a noticable difference.

10 feet should do it. Mine is less than that. It
depends on how you mount your floats with respect to
angle of incidence of the floats to the fuse. More
angle and your tail goes down.

Bob, looked through 5 years of my posts and only found the one when Steve
was trying to see if the underside of the wing was going to clear his
interior shops roof. I told him then that 10 feet was plenty if the Antennas
were on the fuselage tailcone and it would still squeeze through 10' with
roof mounted antennas. I believe the actual height when rolling is 9' 7" to
the fin but could be off by an inch or so.

Hello Brian:

I have uploaded a Rebel side view line drawing with mention of dimensions on
amphib floats to the group. I received this from MAM on July 28 2000. If you
wish to take a peek, look under 36-R Miscellaneous -
"dimensionswithfloats.jpeg".

With conversations with Steve Sloan concerning reducing the length of the
struts, mine may end up being about 3 inches lower.
