Wing tip lights

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:52 pm

I think you guys are in a 33/33/33 hiccup!!! I tend to beleive that Rick is
asking about the Wing Tip Landing light kits that you have to install inside
the wing tip and you must cut out the fiberglass in the area and adjust for
the lense to fit etc. These are $550US per pair and depending where you read
it on MAM's site do not come with bulbs and possibly the bezel. This can be
done yourself and the hardest thing to do is forming the lexan lense cover
to put the shape back in the tip, or the easy way and buy the kit from MAM
(or hope the Fife gets going and brings out an entire tip for you complete
with light).

Well, after reading Mike's post, I assumed that I mis-understood Rick's
question. I bought my strobes from A/C Spruce. I was speaking about the
wingtip landing/taxi light kit only.
Heck, a 50/50 shot at understanding is about as good as I ever do!

Bill Delcambre
Oops. I just re-read the email about the wingtip price from MAM and it
doesn't ask about wingtip strobes. Just says wingtip kit. There are
only
two wingtip things on their website: strobes and landing/taxi light
kits. I
guess there's a 50% chance that Rick was asking about the strobes.

Wing tip lights

Hiccups, huh? Good diagnosis.

You're right about forming the lenses being a challenge. I've seen it done.
After making the mold and waiting till the wife was out of sight of the
oven, 4 or 5 tries had the plastic looking good enough. Good thing the
lexan is cheap. Don't forget, my friends, there will be a left and right
mold. :)

My wingtip light kits (landing/taxi) came WITH both bulbs, bezels and all
stainless hardware. Included was all the necessary wire and terminal
fittings. The lenses fit perfectly. Everything needed was in the box.

Now, the wingtips, themselves, were an interesting fit. But that dog's been
beat already.

Wing tip lights

Great pict's Wayne. This is looking easier all the time. One thing you
didn't portray... How did you form your Lexan ? It appears you have a flush
finish or a recessed finish. How did you form the Lexan to fit this?

I am also curious. Looks like the hole is larger than it needs to be to
let the light out. Was there a specific reason for that?

David Fife

Wing tip lights

Post by David Fife » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:52 pm

OK Guys,

Let me give all of you an update on my progress with
Hoerner Tips with Landing/Taxi/Sequential Flashing
lights, for the Rebel. Includes Wing Tip, 3" halogen
lights and mounting housing, 2 pair of lenses (incase
you junk one cutting them to fit), and wiring diagram
to accomplish the LTSF system. There will be a slight
charge for shipping, call me or e-mail and we can
discuss that.

Moose/2500 tips, I have a part pending from a local
builder. (thank you Peter&Monica) It will be a Hoerner
tip with lights same as Rebel, but, I will not have
mold completed until end of year.

I am progressing on the new molds and hope to have
them completed prior to leaving for S n F. Upon my
return I will go into production. I will have them by
the end of May, some maybe sooner.

I do have some pending orders, Angus McKenzie, Mike
Basic, Wayne O'Shay, Ron (can't remember your last
name) and possibly a couple more in the Ontario,
Canada area. Please send me an E-mail so we can
discuss.

To all other, send me an e-mail directly as I don't
want to advertise on this page, it is for builders not
sales people.
I felt I hand to answer Bob's messages lately and let
you all know I am still out here.

Wing tip lights

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:52 pm

Rick, yes the Lexan is recessed. That is the reason for glassing in the lip
around the hole. So the Lexan can sit flush with the surrounding tips
fiberglass. This area on the rebel tip doesn't have a lot of curve to it so
I just use 1mm Lexan and cut it to fit. Then use a heat gun to hand form it
and take the stress out of it/roll the corners over a bit where the screws
go so they don't curl up proud. If I remember the SR tips I have here
correctly, they are even more flat across the nose so would be even easier
for the Lexan if you keep it tight to the physical wing end side of the tip.

If you want to do a corner light like MAM shows. If you can carefully cut
the corner out of the wing tip in one piece and then add a bit of an edge to
it all the way around for some leeway. Cover in felt and then place/clamp
your heated up Lexan over it to form.

The pics do make the hole look quite a bit larger than the light. I guess it
could be a bit smaller, but some of this is just the angle the pictures are
taken from and the other reason for sizing is that I wanted both holes to be
identical but one light is pointed down for taxi and the other straight out
for landing (so this has to be taken into consideration). Basically find a
set of lights you like and work a hole to fit them. Howard's has the round
projector lights in them and his openings are about 1/3rd the size of the
ones I pictured that I did for George Christie.

Cheers,
Wayne

Roger M Jewell

Wing tip lights

Post by Roger M Jewell » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:52 pm

Any Par36 size bulbs from the auto parts store (or on the web) will work.
I checked with Kenmore Air Harbor for landing light bulbs, $75 each.
Went across the street to NAPA and the same bulb was $25! The book at
NAPA gave that bulb's life as 11 hours. I selected the GE H7604 with a
life of 100 hours and found it on the web for $15. I found a flood for
the taxi light for $7.50. They fit nicely into the leading edge fixture
from Murphy.
