O-360 oil filter clearance

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:46 pm

Hi Ralph !

Might not be the ideal answer, but you wouldn't be the
first builder to take an old round kitchen pot with a lip - maybe
8 or 10" diameter - and rivet it it to the firewall behind the
filter. You have to cut a hole in the firewall first !! ;-^)

This gives a handy depression for clearance, while
strengthening the f/w, (and filling the hole ;-) )

Not what you wanted to hear, I'm sure, but might be easier
than the Airwolf remote ..... although that could make changes easier.

with the filter at the 11 o'clock position viewed from the engine rear.
By my measurements this would stick up through the cowl. All in all,
not a good day. All the archive pictures found do not show a filter.
Fall back position seems to be an Airwolf type remote filter with extra
hoses and firewall space.

Has anyone else encountered this and does anyone have any ideas for a
best solution?

O-360 oil filter clearance

Post by rebel » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:46 pm

Ralph,
I just posted 2 pictures under Rebel engine. They show the clearance
that I have with the O-320-E2D dynafocal mount, 12" spinner,Ihave the upper
cowl all mounted and the pictures are the best way that I thought I could
show the clearance.
Good luck, you'll need it,
Rick D.

O-360 oil filter clearance

Post by Robert and Olga Johnson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:46 pm

Ralph, My O320 H2AD had the spin-on filter adapter also, but did not have
enough clearance for a regular aircraft filter. I had to modify small auto
filters-(retap). After several messy oil changes I splurged and bought the
Airwolf remote and hung it on my Engine mount. - No room on the firewall.
This was a great move.-Easy to change the nice "big" filter now hanging down
from the mount.-Bob Rebel "652" (flying)

While we are on this thread I just posted a picture to the archives
(Rebel -engine) of an Airwolf remote filter mounted on the right side of the
firewall.

O-360 oil filter clearance

Post by Legeorgen » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:46 pm

Hi Ralph,

I have a B&C 90 degree filter with a 2" (?) spacer mounted on an 0320 E2D, in
the 11:00 position, with a standard speed cowl from MAM. It all fit very well
and cleared the cowling too. Works great. I can't say for an 0360. There is a
few picture I posted a year ago, still in the archives, of this filter. Good
luck.

Wayne; Having looked at your pic. of the filter mount (re Airwolf remote) it
looks like removing the filter might be a bit of a challenge. Mine is
mounted on the nice white "vee" of the engine mount in your picture which
permits easy, un-obstructed removal. Yes I had to make an aluminum mount
first , and rubber isolated it when mounting. I did not want any chance of
the unit vibrating against the engine mount. Hopefully I will be able to fly
in to the next Rebel meet if you care to have a look. Bob - Rebel "652"

Wayne G. O'Shea

O-360 oil filter clearance

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:46 pm

Not really Bob! I remove the lines anyway, to get every bit of dirty oil out
of the system that I can. I start by removing the right side line from the
filter base and this then allows easy access to the filter for removal. Then
I tip the right side line down to drain out and then remove the other line
and do the same so they drain everything left in the lines as far back as
the accessory case adapter. Then I install a new filter, safety it and then
reinstall the hoses. Not a huge deal only once a year, as this is Howard's
and it's stored almost 7 months per year and he does good to get 50 hours on
it per summer. A couple times it's been changed twice in a year, but not the
last couple.

Yours definitely sounds easier to work on though and if you have the cowling
off why not get the guys/gals a picture for the archives so they have all
the options at hand.

On my own Rebel, I just do it the easy way and run the original Lycoming
screen housing. I find a margarine bowl sits nicely below it in the
criss-cross of wires/etc, pull the 4 bolts and tip it into the bowl. Pull
the screen out for a good look and a cleaning, reinstall into the housing,
new $1.25 gasket and bolt the assembly back on. I've only dumped the bowl
against the firewall once in 8 years! My screen housing has a Vernatherm in
it as well, so my oil cooler isn't trying to work in the winter time, and I
don't have to block it off like you need to on a Super Cub. It's also easier
and quicker to see if your engine is falling apart when cleaning the high
pressure and low pressure screens, than it is having to work your way
through a yard or so of filter element after cutting open the filter
canister. Everyone that's running a filter does this messy ritual right?? IF
you're not you will never know something is letting go until it tooooo late!

The other important one is to check the suction screen, as I find most guys
that have a quick drain just drain the oil through it, pull their filter off
(throw it away) and install a new one. Then they fill her back up with oil
and go flying again. The suction screen doesn't get checked, nor does the
filter element for any foreign materials.

Don't get me wrong, the filter is a great option that removes the finer
particles and keeps your oil a little cleaner looking and stretches oil
changes out, but based on lots of Cherokee 140's from flying schools going
well beyond 2000 hours between overhauls (running a screen) I don't think it
really changes the life cycle of the engine, especially when most of us
should be changing the oil based on calendar period vs 25 or 50 hrs of
airtime anyway.

Cheers,
Wayne
