INSURANCE

Post by Rhodes » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:45 pm

Mike
Does not surprise me as I don't believe they even write any new policies in
AK. They are still taking my money for now but I think I will check Falcon
also. I have another plane insured with Avemco in the lower 48 so maybe that
is why I am still with them.

I just called Avemco this morning, and they will no longer write any type
of
policy on Murphy kits... builders insurance, or standard coverage for a
completed kit. When I asked why I was told their policy had changed. I
would
imagine they are getting out of the homebuilt market. The representative
I
spoke with recommended Falcon insurance... a quick web search turned up an
address of http://www.falconinsurance.com

I think (and I could be wrong). They want time in (type and like) meaning
similar horse power and performance. My J-3 sign off wasn't good enough for a
Rebel had to do time in a Citabria for HP and performance reasons.

Makes sense to me... rep I spoke with told me it wasn't worth their time for
the premiums they get. When I asked why it was worth their time in the
lower 48, since I assume the premiums would be comparable, he didn't have an
answer.

Oh well, my home owners policy allows all kind of specialty add ons, maybe I
can get them to cover this as well.

Mike,

If you are an EAA member I think I would call them and see if they will

back where a provision of EAA going to a company was that they would
insure all members.

Insurance

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:52 pm

Jim I've never really bothered to track down an insurer that would cover an
airfield. I advertise in both main Canadian publications and it clearly
states "PPR" for our field, as it also does in the flying farmers FS if it
ever got updated in the last 8 years. If you land and screw up I will be
adamant that you didn't call ahead, even if you had been here a thousand
times before!!!!

My hanger is covered under my insurance policy on the entire property, as it
was listed very clearly as an "Aircraft Hanger" on the original application
and nobody questioned it for coverage as an outbuilding (of course the
airplane and anything associated aren't covered but that's what hull
insurance is for if you so chose). I have a 1.2 million dollar blanket
policy for replacement value of principal building, out buildings, contents
and loss of use and 5 million in liability coverage for $1700/yr. I had to
go this route as the usual policy's spell out an allowance of only 10% of
the value of your principal residence for outbuildings and that will not
cover a 5000sq ft hanger and 1800sqft shops value. With the blanket policy
everything could be "leveled" and all can be rebuilt with the blanket
amount. The policy even spells out that my "front lawn" is covered for 5% of
the principal dwelling replacement cost if the loss is by fire.
lightning..... IMPACT BY AIRCRAFT..... , spacecraft or land vehicle..etc. So
if you really screw up in my yard I should be able to get the "lawn"
re-graded and seeded for free (less my $500 deductible).

I also have a 10 million dollar blanket liability policy for myself covering
ANY airplane that I fly and hull insurance on my personal airplane. IF the
plane gets crushed in the hanger the hull policy will cover it and the house
policy will cover the hanger. Hope I never have to try them on for size on
either account!!

The only place that I might trouble and needed to jump though hoops is my
workshop and the fight to say it's just a "hobby"! If it's a business it's
not covered according to the policy fine print and that is why my
corporation is registered in the towns industrial park!

Bill, my policy also has coverage for other properties I own. The 80 acres
next door is covered for the same $5million in liability coverage for $13
extra on the house policy!

Just add "additional properties - recreational land" to your house policy to
get liabilty coverage on it. Anyone that owns vacant land should have this
or you are going to be sued if a hunter shots his partner while they are
trespassing on your property!

Steve Halvorsen

INSURANCE

Post by Steve Halvorsen » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:08 pm

Hi everyone:

NEED HELP! ! ! !

I have been a lurker of the list for several months as we have a MOOSE (SR
213) quick build on order since last Sept. and it is to be shipped within
the next month or so, I hope. Haven't had much to offer the list as we have
not started to build it yet. When that starts I'm sure we'll have LOTS of
questions.

You guys and gals have a lot of good answers to the questions asked and this
list has a wealth of knowledge to be offered to anyone building a MURPHY
kit. Keep up the good work.

Now for my question:

Is there anyone that has built a moose with the M-14 engine installed flying
other than MAM's?
In talking to our insurance broker, he cannot find ANY company that will
write a policy for this airplane. He deals with ALL eight companies that
cover aircraft and none will write a policy.
The only thing they will write (maybe) is liability coverage, no hull
coverage. EAA only deals with six of the eight companies in the market.

Need to find out if anyone has coverage on this style airplane and who the
insurance company is so that we can contact them. Or if anyone is in the
process of building one in this configuration and has insurance lined up.
It would be a real shame to put all the work into building such a great
plane and not be able to get coverage on it.

I realize that it will be awhile before the plane will fly but, we want to
get coverage for at least the kit for now just in case.

Thanks in advance for any help sent my way:

Steve H.
