B & C 90* filter adapter for O-320
B & C 90* filter adapter for O-320
I know someone on the list is using the B & C 90 degree oil filter adapter
on their O-320 but can't remember whom it is. Please speak up and tell me if
you have it on a conical mount or dynafocal mount engine. Doesn't look like
much room for it on the dynafocal MAM mount, as the brace tube goes across
there. The conical mount has no obstuctions in the way, so not an issue.
I just want to be sure before I start wheeling and dealing pricing, with
different options, on these O-320-A2B's I have going through the engine
shop. If someone wants one modified into a dynafocal mount pattern I need to
know if the B & C filter adapter will work for them.
Thanks,
Wayne

B & C 90* filter adapter for O-320
Hi Wayne, I am not using one, but one of the guys that helped develope it for B+C has one on his LOng-ez. I'm sure it's a dynafocal mount, and the ez's are even tighter than the Rebels. I'm not sure of an engine mount change, but I believe it has been certified for the 172's with both mounts. The guys at B+C are really helpful, so maybe just give them a call. Other than that, I can do some measuring for you in the next couple of days. Good luck, Curt

Wayne,
There is a picture of a rebel with one on a dynafocal mount. I cannot access
the "mad dog" site but I do have the address for it. I printed a copy of the
picture and have attached a file. I have the picture in front of me. Here is the

B & C 90* filter adapter for O-320
Thanks for ALL the responses guys!!!!! The spacer is good for another
reason. Now you have room to put a bowl under it for when you pull the
filter off, to catch the quart of oil that will come out before you get it
threaded off!!!
I'd say from the picture, by comparison to the 2" firewall channel, that the
spacer you installed Bruce is at least 2 1/4" thick. If you get a chance can
you measure so there is no guess work required at my end (if and when the
time comes).

B & C 90* filter adapter for O-320
Hey Wayne:
When I change the oil on my Long-EZ with the B&C 90* adapter, I pull the bottom
plug (get my oil sample as suggested) then poke a small hole in the oil
cannister to reduce suction at the top. There is a small amount of residual oil
that drains when unscrewing the filter. I made a plastic scoop affair that
forces the oil into the drain bucket (sometimes . . .=:-). The distance from my
firewall to the oil cannister is VERY small, so the EZ doesn't use the extra
spacer.
I am not sure what the design of the Rebel engine mounts are, as I have never
see one up close. However, the B&C is great piece of "space saving" equipment
and the folks at B&C are good to work with. I am going to use B&C equipment on
my Rebel (when the time arrives).
Have a GREAT weekend.

B & C 90* filter adapter for O-320
Wayne,
I've been gone camping with the family for a week. I will measure the spacer Thursday when I'm back at the hanger. I believe you are right, it measured about 2 1/2 inches. B&C offer two common spacer sizes and I used the larger one. They will send you the filter, you call them back with the right spacer size and they send it right away.

Well, from the photo it looked like the 2.5" spacer was the one to get but
once installed it is apparent that it is too close to the reinforcing brace on
the firewall. I milled down a wooden block to the next spacer size, 1.4", and
installed it with the oil filter adapter. This is the one to use with an O-320-
E2D dynafocal mount. It provides .70" clearance between the engine mount and
filter. It also provides about 1 1/8" clearance to the firewall brace.
Good luck, you'll need it

Rick,
That's my installation of the B&C 90* filter you looked at on the list files. I ordered the 1 1/4" spacer with the filter but had to return the spacer for the larger spacer (2 1/2" ?). The shorter spacer only gave a 1/4" clearance of the filter from my engine mount (0320 E2D) that was supplied by MAM. I used Barry engine mounts, also supplied by MAM. I did have to sand the flange on the 2" firewall reinforcing fix, that spans the top two engine mounts, in order to maintain a 1/2" clearance from the flange. The end product was a 3/4" space between the firewall and filter.
The filter works very well and keeps an already crowded firewall less so. I like not having two more long, not to mention expensive to replace, oil hoses and fittings, like the remote Wolf type filters use. Just one more thing to maintain. The B&C 90* system is less weight and I would use it again.
If you have access to a mill, you could mill the large spacer down to about 2" and it would fit even better. The 1 1/4" spacer was to short for my installation.

Bruce,
Thanks for mentioning your installation details. This only proves how
each installation is unique. The oil filter that I am using is the shorter
one, CH48108. I do not know if there is a difference in diameter. My
installation also uses the MAC engine mount with the Barry Mounts and I have
the previously noted .70" clearance. Maybe your 1.4 spacer from B&C was
incorrect. Did you measure it when you received it? It would not be the first
time a vendor sent an incorrect or defective part. Also note that I machined
my 1.4 spacer out of a wood block just to see if it would work. The true test
will be when the real part arrivesand installed. When it does I will have too
look real close to see if there is some dimension that other builders can
measure so that they can determine which spacer will fit. The other
possibility is that there are different engine mounts out there.
Good luck, you'll need it,
Rick D.

B & C 90* filter adapter for O-320
Hi Rick,
It sounds as if both B&C filter spacers are able to work with the Rebel 0320 installation. The clearances are tight with either filter spacer so every builder should make his own jig to test its fit for the correct size spacer.
I believe it is a much better system than the Wolf firewall filters and hoses that I have looked at. It gets very tight behind the accessory case and firewall on a Rebel and the less clutter is a big plus.
I use the engine's mechanical fuel pump and an electric back up because of my Ellision Throttle Body Carburetor. This makes the firewall a bit more crowded than a gravity system but I like the benefit of the Throttle Body. It has a better fuel distribution than a carburetor, closer spreads on the EGT's, more accurate fuel leaning, better fuel economy and it works in any position, because there is no float. After 33 hours it has never failed to start on the first revolution, even when the engine is hot. I only ran a primer to 2 cylinders.
