This week my friend Dave and I installed the O-540 on the Super Rebel using Dynafocal Mounts. It was complicated as the Murphy mount was a bit off -- making it difficult to get the final pin in. Three of the mounting pads line up well but one is cocked at a bit of an odd angle.
Now that the struggle is complete, I'm installing accessories. QUESTION: the Lycoming manual doesn't say anything about putting anything on the gaskets. Are they installed dry or should I put some oil on them or something else? Specifically, prop governor, starter, fuel pump, oil filter mount, vacuum pad mount with SD-20 standby alternator, etc. I know about the mags.
Thanks,
Jerry Folkerts

Re: Engine Install
Good morning Jerry,
I always install my gaskets dry and see what happens regarding seepage. Some folks probably use aviation grade permatex or the red gasket spray but I have never found this necessary for accessories.
On another subject......I am about the same stage in my Moose project and have a IO-540 C1B5 hung on the firewall. I am using the engine mount that came with the engine as it uses a "reverse" dynafocal with the rubber parts sandwiching the engine ears instead of the mount. With my engine mounted on the firewall it has a 2 degree down angle instead of being perpendicular to the firewall. It also is offset to the right to compensate for for P factor but that is understandable. Would it be possible for you to let me know how your engine is mounted with reference to the firewall?
Thanks,
Randy Albritton

Re: Engine Install
Randy,
I'll try and take some measurements this afternoon. I have the same mount with the reverse dynafocal mounts. We found the Murphy mount to be quite a bit off making it very difficult to get the bolts in. Now that we have them in, I need to remove the lower two and replace with a shorter bolt. I find the nuts too close to the case for comfort. I can basically get rid of one or two threads plus an AN washer on the nut side by the case.

Re: Engine Install
So Jerry are you saying that you had to move one of the mount legs out of its "built" shape to get it on the firewall? CW

Re: Engine Install
Randy,
My engine is installed with the same angles you mentioned. I used a square and wagged the angles, but they were close.
Craig,
Not on the firewall, but on one of the engine mount fittings. Luckily, I didn't drill the firewall per the Murphy plans. I drilled it in place with the mount. Otherwise, I would have been off in all dimensions.

Question for Randy
Randy,
On your lower two mounts, did you orient your bolts with the threads or head next to the engine?
Thanks,
Jerry
