[rebel-ramble] Ramble planning Meeting ...

Post by Garry Wright » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:47 am

Are there to be any minutes of the alleged meeting? We who are on the
route wouldn't mind being let in on all the dirty little secrets even
though we couldn't come to the meeting.

They will also miss out on at least 2 really GREAT

Don't forget to bring along things for Show 'n Tell

Minutes ???!!!!! Heck, there'll be HOURS !!! ;-)
Oooohhhhh .....

Don't worry, all the important stuff will be on the
web site, as soon as I can get it together .... And we
can bring you up to speed pretty quickly en route ! :-)

There is a daily 'map session' to run through the
next day's route, hazards, and pleasures - either in
the evening, or the morning before blast off ...
lots of time to punch in the points of interest in the
GPS before heading out.

Will try to get the TTB (Things To Bring) pages
done next week ....

Do you have any amateur radio operators along? If so maybe they could run APRS. This a method that connects a amateur radio with GPS and puts the coordinates on the web. As an example you can use the following link to see where I am.

http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/find.cgi?call=VE3DEL-14

You can get more information at the following site.

I am hoping to come see you folks in Winnipeg this year.

Ron Shannon,

Do you have a really light weight computer? I have combo handheld
(Vertex Spirit) that will do 2 meters as well as air freqs. If we had a
pocket size computer which runs on batts we might be able to do this.

[rebel-ramble] Ramble planning Meeting ...

Post by Bob Patterson » Mon Feb 20, 2012 5:47 am

Hi Del !

Neat stuff !! I figured Garry would be up for it !

Don't know if we have any others ....

Be great if you can make it to Lyncrest for the 7th !
Sounds like it'll really be a big blast - maybe even a pig roast !!
Those guys know how to party !!!!!

The meeting went well. Looks like only one 'maybe' for
the north route, for now - maybe more later. A couple more
'Registered' ... Many didn't get to the meeting - no surprise,
given the weather & distance, but we had a good run through
the maps & photo albums, and lots of stuff on 'Things to Bring'.

Might be a smaller group to start this time, but more
joining in along the way. Hoping that those who join at
Manistique will party along to Ashland, Thief River Falls,
and Winnipeg !! That will be a fun run ! :-)

Still have a couple of guys looking for rides ....

I use a Kenwood TH-D7A handheld, it has a TNC built so all you need is NMEA output from any GPS ( I use a handheld Garmin Etrex Legend). This handheld radio just needs to configured and you're "live". The mobile Kenwood D700 has the same capability.

Ron:

None that I know of. For me it has become a safety item in my Rebel. Doing all the bush flying here in Northwestern Ontario, it is a great way to let everyone know exactly where you are if you were ever to have a problem. With a handheld you can get quite a range. I have a old bent antenna I plan to add to the plane so I have an external antenna then I will have 70-100 mile range airborne.
