Greetings,

I am sending this email to all my friends, relatives, aviation and bu
siness
associates to ask you to lend a hand in saving the Banff and Jasper
Airstrips from destruction.
As most of you know I am on the board of directors of the Canadian Ow
ners
and Pilots Association (COPA) as well as a pilot, aircraft owner and
airport
owner. One of my special interests has been working to prevent Parks
Canada
from closing the Banff and Jasper airstrips.

Thanks for the update, John !! This matter needs everyone's help,
and yours is appreciated !

Will keep you posted on plans for the next Ramble fly 'n camp
trip - there's a good chance we'll be going by Banff ! :-) :-)

PS
I've forwarded your reply to the Ramble list - it might help others
with wording.

My personal message to Parks Canada

The possible closing of the Banff and Jasper airstrips has been under
discussion for some time. I continue to have great difficulty in
understanding why their closing represents an overall advantage. Having
been in the vicinity of both airstrips by car in May on a cross-Canada
trip, I fail to see that they are environmentally intrusive. On the
contrary, they are a gentle reminder of our proud Canadian aviation
heritage involving light aircraft. There is, of course, a much more
serious side, laid out in the Air Safety Risk Assessment report. I
support their conclusion that both the Banff and the Jasper airstrips are
necessary for emergency and diversionary use. It is a chilling experience
to be in a light aircraft when the weather turns bad rather suddenly and
you have no place to land. My son and I have built and fly a small
amateur-built CH601 Zodiac aircraft in southern Ontario. In this area,
one is unlikely to be caught by a sudden weather change, always providing
one exercises due care and common sense. That last sentence is much less
true in the mountainous region around the Banff and Jasper airstrips.
There, the weather can do undpredictable things quite suddenly. It is my
belief, and that of many other people more knowledgeable than I, that the
closing of the Banff and Jasper airstrips will cause people to die. That
should represent a heavy responsibility to Parks Canada. Perhaps restrict
their use to a true emergency role if that is absolutely necessary. But
close them permanently? Surely not.
