Hi all you potential Alaska vacationers--Just forwarding odd messages to let
you know we are well along in planning for the upcomming trip.Horst has
up-dated our itinerary which optimistically has us meeting the USA -Mexican
group at Dawson Creek on our 4th. day and in Fairbanks end of day 7. In the
real world it will probably be more like 10 to 12 days-- but one can always
fantasize , OK!!? Keep in touch and try to convince yourself that you
deserve a holiday and fly with us to Alaska.--- Regards Phil

To The Alaska Pilots:

Things are starting to get interesting in the details of our planned trip,
in particular
our point of entry (POE) into Canada. It seems that since the September
11th incidence,
the Canadian Customs at Leithbridge, Alberta, Canada has been
discontinued, at least for
now. That means that we will have go to Calgary International (CYYC) as
our Point Of
Entry (POE) into Canada. I have been in communications with Steve
Zakreski, Jim Corner,
and Wayne Pederson of Kitfox fame in Calgary to verify this. They have
assured me that
Calgary International has a fair amount of General Aviation traffic,
training schools,
etc., so it can be consider friendly to GA traffic. It is Mode "C"
airspace, but that
should not be a problem for any of our aircraft that do not have a
transponder. Only one
aircraft in each flight group is required to operate their transponder.
As a mater of
fact, the controller will probable ask the others in the flight group to
place their
transponders in standby.

Now, nice things will start to happen. First a bit of history. Back in
1998 during the
first Alaska trip, our group of eight Kitfoxes were invited to spend the
night at Fort
Nelson by the ESSO guy named Ernie Kiss. He offered us discounted fuel,
discounted motel
rooms in town, transportation, and a large hanger for all 8 Kitfoxes. If
you remember,
that is where we had to pull the wings off the Vixen and slosh out both
fuel tanks.
Anyway, Ernie has since moved to Youngstown, Alberta (East of Calgary) and
set up a
maintenance shop. He asked if we could stop there for a BBQ made from
good Alberta beef.
They have fuel, accommodations, and hangar for any maintenance or
whatever. They have an
airstrip right at their hangar, about 3 1/2 ENE of Youngstown. He said
they could handle
any size group. They have 25,000 acres to use if needed! Their strip is
supposed to be
listed in the next Canada Flight Supplement.

If all goes as planned, I have asked Steve Zakreski, Jim Corner, and Wayne
Pederson to fly
in and join the fun. Right now we have 9 aircraft from the USA, two from
Mexico, and will
pick up three Canada aircraft from Ontario as we pass through Dawson
Creek. Now, if the
Canadians were to join us down at Calgary we could have a real "Calgary
International
Flyin". Let's hope so.
