80/87 Fuel/912 fuel

For anyone's info:

I have approx 480 hours on Rotax 912's, and have been using 50% ll100 and
50% Sunoco 94 octane. Had an occasion to put in high compression cylinders
last summer , (at 445 hours) and found that the pistons were as clean and
corrosion free as if they were new.

Bob, what octane ratiing is the Shell??

www.airnav.com has a fuel stop planner... you punch in were you're going
and what you're fuel requirements are, and it will tell you where you can
find it and how much they're charging. They've got some other good
planning tools also.

It's pretty hard to get 80/87 anywhere now .... I certainly wouldn't
use that Hammond junk !! (I've lost a fuel line to it ! ) You can add
TSP(??) to 100 LL to reduce the lead, and it looks like that's what
we'll have to do until they discontinue 100LL in a couple of years !!
:-(
I don't know of anywhere on the route that has 80/87 - there is
auto fuel at Okotoks, and perhaps one other spot. Haven't visited any
of the places south of the border between Libby and Grand Forks ...
Unfortunately, the auto fuel is Regular (80 octane), so no good for
the 912's. We have run the 912 for 50 hours at a time on 100LL - it
cleans up quickly again after a couple of tanks of Shell Gold....
doesn't seem to bother it much. I've always run 100LL in the O-235,
but I do run Shell Bronze in the other tank as often as I can...

Anybody out there know what's available for fuel ???

80/87 Fuel/912 fuel

Shell Gold is also 94 octane. We have used it for most of the 980 hours
on our 912. The problem with 100LL is that it gets collected in the
synthetic oil and settles out, blocking oil passages, especially in the
lifters, making them stick. Can also cause problems in other areas....
like the valve stems, and fouling the spark plugs. Running a couple of
tankfuls of Shell Gold seems to dissolve this & everything runs great again.

The easy solution is to change oil at 25 hours, instead of 50.
Now that it is getting hard to get 20W50 synthetic (most now are 5-50),
I think I'll go back to straight Castrol 50 for summer flying, and change
at 25 hours. The regular oil isn't so bad with the extra lead - holds it
in suspension better, supposedly.

The Murphy factory used several different brands & settled on
Shell Gold as their choice - I have had rough running with some others
(notably Petro-Can !).

We have run 10LL for 50 hr. at a time, on trips, and the 912
always recovers after a bit of 'good gas'. :-)

It is a good idea to have a gas can along when travelling - you
never know when you might get a chance to fill it up. (or might HAVE TO,
as we have hit several airports that were sold out of fuel :-( )
