Hi Karl !

We regularly use Piney/Pine Creek, from Minnesota to Manitoba -
it's south & slightly east of Winnipeg. One paved strip. Card-operated
fuel (sometimes), washrooms, unicom, & Customs.

Another strip we have used is Whetstone/DelBonita from Montana
to Alberta - it's south and west of Lethbridge, just out of the
mountains. One 5,000 ft. E-W grass strip - no facilities, just Customs.
Has lots of prairie dog holes, and wire fences on both sides of the
runway - no fun in a crosswind !

There are a few others along the Alberta border, west of Whetstone,
like Sweetgrass/Coutts .... They are mostly grass strips with very
little traffic.

Learned of these places from Winnipeg ATC many years ago ...
back when Piney was just a grass farm field next to the highway.
Just another interesting novelty of aviation that one learns while
Rambling !! :-)

buy for my airplane ! (Much rather have a good GPS so <I> know

We have managed to Ramble all these years without one, and expect
to continue. You DO need an exemption letter from the FAA - usually
because of insufficient (or none) electrical system. We usually
have ONE Rambler with a transponder, in which case we file as
a "flight of 12", or whatever, on ONE xponder code, & one flight
plan. We've also found at least 5 places where you can cross
without a flight plan ... because you don't FLY, you ROLL,
because the runways cross the border ! :-)

As Wayne says, we will ALL need passports !! :-(

One of the ideas of the Ramble was to show that it's still
possible to cross the country in something like a J-3 Cub,
like the old barnstormers, with just a clean windshield and
an Esso road map. (We HAVE had Ramblers use CAA TripTicks !)
We emphasize pilotage, rather than autopilots ! Not that
a nice AvMap colour moving map GPS is a bad thing !! ;-)

Have heard rumours of Owner Maintained class going to
Amateur Built - would be sensible, so may not happen ! ;-)

Thanks they do sound interesting i wonder if they were built back during ww2
when they were pushing harvards across the border Karl

None of the strips we use were ! Piney didn't exist even 20 years
ago !! I do wonder where those wartime strips were - perhaps places
like Pembina, ND, or maybe Fort Erie, ON ???

We do fly over a few old WWII strips - some are still active,
while others are just shadows in the weeds ... We had a peek in
the old WWII hangar at Stanley, NS, on the 2003 Ramble.

Other interesting places we might fly over/visit are "Dog River, SK",
home of the TV show 'Corner Gas', and "Cicely, Alaska", home of
the old TV show 'Northern Exposure' .... You see lots of interesting
places on a Ramble !! ;-) :-)

There's another great one about an hour southwest of Winnipeg called
Dunsheath, North Dakota. It located right on the border and, like
Piney/Pine Creek, it has a US and a Canadian ramp and both US and Canadian
customs are available at the vehicle crossings right beside the airport.
Nice paved strip and no flight plan required to fly in.

The really interesting thing about this airport is that it is located at the
International Peace Garden, an absolutely georgous place that commemorates
the long history of peacefull, neighborly relations between the people of
the two countries. It's well worth a vist if you're in the neighborhood and
the gardens are just a short stoll from the airport. The entrance is on the
US side but the gardens themselves straddle the border. Check it out at

I'd forgotten completely about Dunseith ! It's not toooo far
from Killarney, another spot we have stopped. I know you folks
sometimes have fly-outs to the Peace Garden.

Is there fuel, and a restaurant at Dunseith ?? Hmmmmmm....
might make a nice side-trip for lunch ... ;-) Maybe we
could lure a few more Lyncrestians along Rambling ! ;-) :-)

There is a restaurant at the Peace Garden but no fuel at the airport, at
least not on the Canadian side. I've never checked on the US side. When we
fly out from Lyncrest our shorter range planes usually refuel on the way
back, either at Killarney or Winkler or Morden.

On our last fly out it was like the rowdy neighbours who stormed into town
and took over the neighbourhood. We pretty much filled the ramp and there
wasn't much parking space left on the Canadian side of the border. Looked
kind of funny because the US ramp, about fifty yards away, was larger but
pretty much deserted.

We're "talking up" the Ramble here abouts and I would not be surprised if
you indeed had a few Lyncrestians, and perhaps others, tagging along. Could
be a record......

Sounds good !

The more Ramblers, the more fun ! :-) We hope that YOU are
coming ALL THE WAY through the Rocks this time !! ;-)

Sounds like we might visit Killarney again ... by now they
must have a nice paved runway ... was large gravel last time ! :-(
When we visited Winkler on Ramble 2000, I was accused of asking
everyone to land on "a sidewalk with numbers on it" ! It was
a bit narrower than some stops ... Morden is a nice airport -
if there's someone around to refuel... Should be an interesting
trip anyway !! :-)

I just had a fantastic 'trip down memory lane' this afternoon -
thanks to Mapquest.com and their satellite shots ! I quickly ran over
some parts of the route - managed to spot High River airport on
the satellite view, and had a quick run through the Bow River
Valley, Kicking Horse Pass, Rogers Pass, and into Vernon !! :-)
Kinda neat - but even the 'max zoom' shots are from a bit higher
altitude than we usually Ramble at !! ;-) :-)

I did find the Peace Garden airport too - noticed that there's
a LOT more zoom detail on the US side of these shots ! Forgot
to see if I could see the old abandoned WWII airport near Hartney ...
and the town of Antler ... something for another snowy day !

Looking forward to a GREAT trip !

I would like take part in the Ramble with my Taylorcraft but I don't think
have the money next year.
I would like to let you know what Fort Erie has a private strip at Fleet
Aircraft and a large privat paved strip by permission only, and no customs,
To clear customs in Niagara Peninsula you have to go to St Catharines or
Niagara Falls NY,
Or other destination in USA
Welland or Niagara Central as it called now has low price on Avgas and it is
not to far to a restaurant or Timmy's. Call RAA members for a ride and a fun
meeting.
Dunville also have customs.
Watch out for jumper in Dunville see the CFS,
There is a small Aviation museum in Dunville as well.
And they film some car testing on the track at the airport, Watch for them
on Speed vision.
