[rebel-builders] bubbles in gel coat

Hi Bob

I DREAM of my tips getting to see 34C :-)

Seriously though, my droop tips have been installed and outside for about a
year now unpainted. They do allow a bit of rain in but have not suffered at
all with any imperfections so far. I guess the hottest they've seen in that
time is about 28 or 29C for a few days.

I know from a kit car friend that air bubbles in the resin mix can expand
and crack the surface if they get too warm. If the gel had bubbles in it as
it cured that could be your problem. If that is the case your best bet is to
rub them down and fill them. Once they're done they should not appear again
(so I'm told !)

When we had our wings outside a few days ago, preparing them for paint
one of the droop tips developed an area of small bubbles. It looked a
bit like grains of sand but slightly larger. The tips had been sanded
and primed and all of the imperfections had been filled. It was a hot
day @ 34 Celsius. It was not hard to repair but we are wondering if that
might show up again after the wings are painted. Has anyone out there
seen this sort of thing before?

Makes sense. Hopefully that will be all of them. Maybe the paint job
it's getting right now will reflect the heat. It will just be hot in
appearance!
Thanks,
Bob.
