Landing lights in wing tips

Post by C/M Beck » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

Hi Bob....could you clarify your comment about "putting a set of Dave
Fife's wing tips on, with landing lights in them". I understood they had a
boss moulded into them for position lights, but did not know about the
landing light possibility.

Not much reponse about spring gear problems....maybe not an issue....or
they need more time in service. Charles Beck

Landing lights in wing tips

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

Hi Charles !

I'm going to mount a pair of quartz automotive lights (the
small rectangular ones) in the front of the wing tips. It is just
a case of making a support bracket out from the wing spar or rib,
and bending a piece of Lexan or Plexiglas for the lens. Several
builders here have done this, and I like it better than cutting
into the wing. The halogen lights pull a lot less juice, and can
be easier to aim...... just <my> thoughts.

We've been trying to convince Dave Fife to add a mounting
lip or something, to the front inside of the tips, or even sell
a completed light installation .... and he's considering it !
Sure would be a popular option !

I suspect you're right - it will be a few years before
many problems appear with the spring gear. It's taken over 20 years
for Cessna's gear problems to be well known ...

<I> still prefer the original bungee gear , especially if
you're going to floats later, because it's lighter and stronger,
and can be cleaned up nicely with fairings. But that's just <me> ! ;-)

Landing lights in wing tips

Post by David Fife » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

You said landing lights? How about landing lights
mounted in the leading edge of Hoerner tips that act
as landing lights and come equipped with a sequential
flashing unit too.
Bob, have you been in my workshop? Well I am in the
process of securing light units to mount in my wing
tips. I am looking at about 2 weeks away from
securing the last parts to complete the project. I do
have a working control box wired to do the controlling
of the lights. Once the lights get here I will begin
work on the installation kit. I'm sure this will
spark your interest Bob. It was a secret project up
until I read this e-mail.
Well, I hope to have a test unit ready for the
November meeting. If the lights get here in time I
hope to have a rough installation kit to show. If
not, at least I will have the control unit and lights.

See everyone on November 12. Curt and I are arriving
in the AM on Sunday.

Landing lights in wing tips

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

Hey Dave !!

WOW !!! Talk about good timing !!! Exactly what people have
been asking for - and the flasher is a GREAT aid to visibility and
bulb life !!

Put me down for the first one - it's just what I need !!
I'm going to leave my tips the full 15" length - this looks like
it'll only be about 3" more than I have now, so no big deal....

What great news !! See you on the 12th - hope the weather's
good ! Maybe somebody will have a digital camera at the meeting,
so we can show the rest of the folks ..... (hint... hint ....) ;-)
