Aileron covering

Post by allsure » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

G'day.

I have finished construction of the ailerons and I am about to get around to covering.

I would appreciate it if someone could give me an idea as to what quantities of Poly products that I need to do the job.

How do I get the Poly paint to match the colour and gloss of the automotive paint I will use on the aluminum?

Regards

Ian,

Poly Tone will never have the "wet" look of glossy auto paints or urethanes.
You can make poly tone more glossy by slowing down it's drying time with
retarders. Paint when it's cool, like in early in the morning or you can even
refrigerate it the night before. Yea, that's right! Just move that casserole
over and stick in the Poly Tone. Some guys buff it out with rubbing compound
after about 30 days (lots if work though).

You can paint your aluminum with it too but you must spray on a thin coat of
epoxy primer first then let it get tacky (about 15 minuets). Then spray a
coat of poly over it and let it dry over night. Re-coat the next day. Poly
tone paints real easy and it touches up very nice. Good for planes that need
repairing a lot, like bush planes. If you don't have a Stitts manual you
should get one. Have fun and Good luck.

Hi Ian

Can't really answer your question as I still haven't done mine yet, but
after talking with ASS and Polyfibre I purchased:

1 quart polytack glue

2 quart polybrush

2 quarts of polyspray (silver ultra-violet blocker). Apparently one
quart might do but they insisted that I should not scrimp on this.

1 gallon of thinner as it is also used for the polytone paint.

I already had some MEK but I also got the thermometer to calibrate my
iron.

The 3 hour hands-on seminar that Polyfibre sponsors was very helpful if
anyone gets the opportunity at sun'n fun or wherever. I had not covered
anything before that seminar.

Getting ready to finish the ailerons. Is there any reason to use Heavy duty fabric or is medium all I need?
Thanks
