[rebel-builders] wheel shimmy on 1800 amphibs

Almost everyone that has an amphib has had shimmy problems, unless they put
in enough wavy washers at the beginning to provide enough dampening. You
need enough to stop the shimmy, but not too many, to have difficulty
steering.

I've got well over 500 hours on mine, 99% on pavement, and still have tread.

Problem with many of them, but I rarely land anywhere but grass so not a big
issue for me.

#1 keep the nose pivot shaft packed full of grease. Wavy washers should be
as tight as possible. If that doesn't do it.. take your front mounting block
off the nose leg and mill it about 3 to 5 degrees.. ream the mounting holes
a tad so the bolts don't bend and reinstall.

Hi Wally !

Welcome to amphib flying ! This is a VERY common problem -
the answer is easy too ! Just add a couple of spring washers
under the bolt that supports the nosewheel, & tighten it up.

Check that bolt for tightness before every flight - or you'll
be buying a lot of tires ..... ;-) Be careful they don't sell
you the cheap 2-ply tires - look the same, but don't last !!

And if you don't have more wavy washers to install handy... you can take a
lick off the end of the pivot shaft to shorten it... .so you'll need less
washers. My personal amphibs have almost 3/16" of play in the front shaft..
up/down... as received from MAM and lots of washers in there. If I landed on
pavement I'd fix that... but I don't and it steers so nice on the grass
loose.

Thanks Wally !

It's nice to hear a kind word ! :-)

I'm sure the guys at the factory appreciate it. They are really
stretched, with minimum staff doing their best to keep up.

Those washers, and a regular tightening, will stop your shimmy.
