I am interested, because if I do wind up with a rebel,
I would be operating it in mountain areas with high
density altitude at times. Upwards of 8-9000' density
field altitude could be common. Plus I would use it to
fly into mountain airstrips in Colorado. Just want to
make sure it would meet the need.

service ceiling

Hi Travis !

FWIW, Rebel #001, with the mighty Rotax 912, of 80 hp., has
been up to 16,000 ft., through "The Rocks" several times, and carries
2 people and lots of baggage, on 95 degree days !

Both our O-235 powered Rebel, and the O-320, have flown with
good loads on hot days, from airfields at 4,000 ft. + , to regular
cruise altitudes of 8,500 to 11,500, with no problems. You'll be
hard pressed to find a better aircraft than the Rebel, for high
altitude operation. That big high-lift wing and the flapperons will
get you out of almost anywhere !!

What is the service ceiling of a Rebel with an O-235
pulling it into the sky? I did not see it on Murphy's
spec sheet.

Thanks,

What defines service ceiling in a unpressurised aircraft? rate of climb?
Well yes - in a way, as your rate of climb at that point would equal zero.
Also, your maximum attainable level airspeed would be approaching stall.

Of course I'm talking about 'absolute Chuck Yeager' service ceiling here.

For pressurized it's first limited by the time of a rapid or emergency
descent (4 min) to 10,000 feet then performance.

Just for the record I looked up my flight test report for my 0-320 Rebel,
while testing temps in full power climb.

At AUW and 17.3in.COG at 60kts it showed a ROC of 1100fpm at 2000ft. 600fpm
at 7000ft. and 350fpm at 13000ft. so there was still some life in the old
girl at that height. ( I didnt wear a jacket and got too cold so I came down
early!!)

Cheers

Service Ceiling:
"Altitude where a single-engine airplane is able to maintain a maximum
climb
of only 100 feet per minute. This altitude is more commonly used than
absolute ceiling, since it represents the airplane's practical ceiling."
