[rebel-builders] skylight doublers

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:16 pm
by Gary Gustafson
Thanks for the replies. If Wayne said that doublers are mandatory
for the small oval sky light opens near the flap handle, that is
good enough for me. I will start drilling them out tomorrow and
make some doublers. It is fun redoing work already thought to be
completed.

I do not have large rectangular roof windows on my plane, but I
have six more oval windows, one in each section, for a total of
eight oval sky light windows. It does not appear that they also
do not have doublers either. Sounds as if I should make doublers
for them also. Is that true or is there less stress in the roof
area?

Thanks for the replies.

The large rectangular roof windows are held in with doublers so nothing more
needed. The oval windows near the flap handle are openings in the cabin
roof that allow a view through the upper windshield. Guru Wayne has said
doublers are mandatory around the oval windows or there will be cracking.
We added them to our Elite as it is much easier during construction before
the windshield goes on.

[rebel-builders] skylight doublers

Hello All,

I haven't seen the large rectangular roof windows; only the skinny ovals.
Are there photos anywhere on the builder site? I couldn't find any. If
anyone has some, I'd like to see them. Thanks, Craig

[rebel-builders] skylight doublers

Craig,

The dimensions for the rectangular skylights, as well as the two forward
ones, are laid out in Ch. 25. (let me know if you need it). I'm also working
on this part of things. Made doublers for the front two skylights today.

BTW, today MAM quoted me $118 for a pair of doublers for those, which is
pretty steep, to say the least, although they are stamped with an inset to
allow recessing the plastic apparently.

I do not think that you need doublers with an inset as the
forward skylights are covered by the windshield anyway.

[rebel-builders] skylight doublers

If you plan to install the full set of skylights in a SR and use a
headliner the hole locations do not match up with the dimensions in the
manual.
This problem would be worth checking out in any model using a headliner
and skylights before cutting. It's a lot of work replacing the fuselage
top skin...Experience!

That being said---I have a set of four skylight frames and Lexan windows
available if some one is interested.

Several reports of cracks around the front openings, the ones under the
windshield, are listed in the archives. I would urge everyone to add
doublers at that location. It is easy enough to do with out the
windshield in the way. The newer top skin is .025" thick, and I would
use at least that thickness for doublers.

[rebel-builders] skylight doublers

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:16 pm

This query probably belongs to the Dept. of Duh, but... is it correct that
the forward, oval skylights under the windshield are not "glazed" with
anything, but just left open? The manual doesn't seem to show any "glass"
there and of course, one doesn't want to be looking through two layers of
window, much less trying to clean them.

None of my gazillion pictures of real Rebels show this clearly, although
that too is probably due to the thick fog that always seems to be around.
:-)

[rebel-builders] skylight doublers

I just cut my front openings, and rolled the edges down a bit, so there is no rubbing against the windshield, and no lexan or doublers on mine.

Thanks, Walter. I'm putting doublers on the bottom side, and may use CS
rivets from the top.

I cut mine out and put a very slight bevel on the edge and then clued some
rubber trim that has a groove in it - which helped finish it off.

Cheers

You're probably right Wayne I didn't know about it when I built my plane
and I foolishly forgot about it when I replaced the windshield last year.
