How many Rebels flying? and spar holes

Post by Tim Hickey » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:15 pm

Hello, Group:

We got back home from a vacation in California and Las Vegas, (broke even)
and now I am getting right into the building of the wings. We (my brother
Mike and I) have gotten to the point of installing the rear ribs on the main
spar, when we had to take a break and knock some pretty bad burrs of the
rear ribs. I don't know much about stamping out wing ribs, but it looks like
the dies must be pretty worn.

That is not a big issue, though, just takes a little time to smooth off the
burr and then we will install them.

I was asked a question the other day, and I thought someone here might have
an idea.
The question is, "How many Rebels are flying?"

Any ideas anyone?

Another item that I got into last week was my interest in cutting some
lighting holes in the main spar near the tip. We plan on flying our Rebel at
LSA limits, (1320), and it seems to me that a few holes between the ribs on
the tips might be a place to shave a little weight. I sent a note to MAM
asking for approval, and they (Jeff) promptly gave me an answer. Not exactly
the answer that I wanted, but I respect their position. The answer was that
without a formal structural analysis they could not approve cutting such
holes. I do understand that they have more to do than dig up off the wall
questions like mine.

But I did get some tips suggesting that there might have been some lighter
gross weight kits with a lighter spar that did have some lighting holes in
the spar near the tip.

Has anyone got info on this?

I have not rejected the idea yet, and I have a friend who I used to work
with who is a very good structural engineer, and he is coming over Tuesday
to take a look at my situation.

But in the mean time, if anyone has insight on the "hole" issue, I would
appreciate the feed back.
