Brian I am off to a slow start on my Rebel. I didn't drop the flying
club membership though so I would be coming in a C172.

Brian #328R,

On the 10 th you wrote Bob a message that you flew to Indianapolis
and
since you saw Anna before you left I am going to assume you left
from
Brampton. Just curious how long the trip took.

I live north of Cincinnati and have been thinking about flying up
to
Brampton for the get together. Just guess-to-mating, I figure the
Indy -
Brampton trip should be comparable to the distance I would have to
travel.

Thanks,

Terry 666R

Brian #328R - Brampton to Indy?

Posted: Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm
by rebelair
Hi Terry

I had very strong headwinds on the way down so the trip took about 4.7 hours
to Indy. The return was much more pleasant with neutral winds aloft and the
trip took about 4 hours with a much lower fuel burn.

Just took a quick look at my JNC and can easily see that the distances from
Indy & Cincinnati about very very close. I cleared customs on the way into
the US from Brampton at Faraday, Ohio. On the return leg, I landed at
Griffith Sandusky - KSKY, a very nice spot to fly from, highly recommended.
Much lower fuel prices than KIND and much friendlier folks. Give you a half
way flying break before cross over Lake Erie doing the island hopping thing.
Once you cross over Pelee Island and onto Point Pelee on the Canadian side,
you fly almost direct to CNC3, (Brampton), a very easy flight.

Terry - Is 666R a flying Rebel. If it is, we would all love to see it and
greatly encourage you to fly up.

Regards

Hi Terry

It would still be great to see you. It is a very nice flight through Ohio,
via KSKY, across the islands to Point Pelee and then straight to Brampton.

Really hope you can make it.

Brian #328R - Brampton to Indy?

Hi Terry !

Just jumping in here with a suggestion.....

For a quick, easy customs clearance, you could flight plan to
Pelee Island and clear there, then head direct to Brampton. Another
possible stop is London, but it's a bit of a detour, a busier airport,
and you might have to wait longer for customs .... DO NOT go to
Hamilton - they have a stiff landing fee !!

Bob and Brian,

The US doesn't require a radio license anymore so someone threw away the
copy of the license that was in the airplane I plan on using. I
understand that I need the license in Canada so I am trying to figure
out how to get a replacement.

Do the customs people go into this kind of detail on the airplane
paperwork?

No !! Canada doesn't require a radio licence either !!!!

I think they DO still want you to have one when visiting,
but NOBODY ever asks about ANY paperwork - just "Did you buy anything?"

Just be VERY sure to call customs ahead of time, and give them
at least an hour advance. I have heard that US Customs can be VERY
difficult if they don't get enough warning - no problem with Canada ...

US customs is a pain in the rear 85% of the time even if you're a US citizen.
It's much nicer dealing with Canadian side.

Brian #328R - Brampton to Indy?

Posted: Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

Hi Terry

We used to have to renew the license on the aircraft annually. All I think
you need to now is your personal radio license i.e. Proof that you passed
the test. In real life though, nobody has ever asked for that kind of
detail ever in my flights inbound to Canada. Going to the US, they check
documents more carefully. Although, I once went into the US at Sandusky
with the air vents stuck wide open in the middle of winter. I was so cold
by the time I landed, it was difficult to speak. The US Customs agents upon
seeing my teeth chatter were kindly satisfied when I pointed to the document
holder in the rear of the aircraft.
