Browsing recently I was very happy to find new info on the R-263
development, a hopeful baby brother for the M14. It's a solid testament to
the developers and backers at Motorstar that they've stayed with this, and
all the testing, regrouping, and engineering. It ain't darts.

I'm very hopeful that they get this worked out. Think I'll hold off on the
Lyc motor mount!

See http://motorstarna.com/r-263-engines/development
...sort of like a round O-250 ;) ...how perfect is that?

-Ben

[rebel-builders] R-263, still alive

Anyone heard anything good or bad about the Rotec? The 3600 looks like a
good sub for the 0320. Probably not practical....but the look and sound are
the best.

[rebel-builders] R-263, still alive

There probably is no engine more practical than a Lyc (or clone) to get
150-170hp. But I shouldn't pretend I'm all about practicality! The Rotec
2800 is too small IMO, and the 3600 is too big, although maybe okay for a
Murphy amphib. A lot of money tho. Not sure this makes sense, but the
lower part count of a 5 cyl radial is somewhat appealing (comparing to the
other radials). The R-263 would be about 50% more displacement than an
R2800. And I like the ~100lbs less than an 0320.

[rebel-builders] R-263, still alive

On a side note...The Rotec doesn't sound like a traditional radial. It is a higher reving engine and has a sound more in tune with a Rotax running at mid range RPM. I'v heard the Rotec running the last couple of years at Oshkosh. It sounds good....just not like an old radial.

BTW, the R263 shows future plans to offer geared reduction too (to get in
the 150hp range).

AWESOME!! That would be great if they did. Especially if it is lighter than the Lyc. and can swing a big prop. By the time I get my Rebel finished I should be able to find a used one (R263) ROTF!!

Ben,
The only other aspect I see is, it is going to look much different with the O-200 cylinders. Push rods on the back side of the engine, sorta takes away from the good looks. Won't have that nostalgic look. :( I sure like the sound of it though.

For the record, I realized my earlier post was a bit whacked. (wouldn't be
the first time)

I said the 3600 is too big, but in fact the R-263 or 250 would be even
bigger in terms of displacement. (3.6L = 220cu in). The 263 would behave
smaller ungeared. The 3600 is already geared, not to mention already
available. I traded emails with Jim at Rotec a couple years ago when the
3600 was just coming on the market. To hear them talk about the torque of
that beast is part of what left me the impression it is too big. I still
think so, and in reality, thinking seriously about the price on these
things is pretty daunting.

Ben,
I checked the 263 out and I knew what you were trying to say. As far as
practicality goes, Jeff at MAM told me the radial's not practical on the
rebel. I wonder why the M-14 is so common on the moose. I haven't written
it off yet (the 3600). If I was totally prctical, I wouldn't be flying or
building! Craig
