[rebel-builders] VG's for the Moose

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:12 pm

Hello Charlie,

I put VG's on my Moose. I used to have a Maule that I flew for 50 hours w/o
VG's then installed them. I felt the same way as your Cub friend--big
difference. Long story short--I think the VG's on the Moose do add aileron
authority at slow speeds but the Moose is not a Cub nor a Maule. While the
VG's made some difference I don't think they made a big difference. With a
loaded Moose you can indeed reduce the stall speed with VG's--maybe even
improve the elevator authority in a flair. However, I don't think VG's on a
Moose make it into the short-field, slow-speed performer like one expects
with a Cub or Maule. In my experience, once you get much below 65 on final
you're committed--you're so far behind the power curve below that speed you
are going to eat a lot of runway trying to go around.

Just my 2 cents. I'd be interested hearing your thoughts.

Ted

Question! My hanger partner and I installed VG's on his Savage-Cub (made in
the Chezch Republic) today. It had a very abrupt stall characteristic
during the landing flare before - very un-cub like; but after VG
installation, it flew like a completely different airplane. Landed just
like a Champ or cub. Also seemed to give better cruise performance though
no real tests were run. Does anyone have any experience or information on
VG installation on the Moose wing and/or tail? I would like to improve the
landing characteristics a bit - seems to sometimes run out of good elevator
authority at slow speeds and with no prop blast during a 3 point flare.

[rebel-builders] VG's for the Moose

Hi Charlie !

Several Moose builders have had very good results with VG's !
Like the Rebels, there are a few who did not .... Best to talk to
a few of those who were happy, and go with the supplier they
used. It's not that the VG's themselves are that different,
but the positioning is critical !

There was a blue & white Moose at Oshkosh that found
they reduced his stall speed by 10 mph !! I think it was
Ryan Mowatt ??? Maybe you can find the brand/supplier
he used ...

VG's on the bottom of the stab, close to the hinge line,
are supposed to help with elevator control ... I dunno !!

[rebel-builders] VG's for the Moose

I used the VG template designed specifically for the Moose by PNW Aero out
of Oregon. They are great folks to talk to and work with--highly
recommended as a vendor. Al Pahxia used PNW Aero as did a few other Moose
folks.
