[rebel-builders] Moose gear leg / axle bolt size

Post by Charlie Starr » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:12 pm

Ted,

Though my SR kit was an early model kit, my axel bolts and holes are all the
same size. Seems odd that the holes and bolts would be different! No
operational problems with my gear.

I'm upgrading my axles/wheels to a larger size. When I took my current
axles off (which I assume are the stock Murphy-supplied axles with any
Moose
or Super Rebel kit) I see that the holes in the axle are all AN-5 size
whereas the holes in the gear leg are a mix of AN-6 (two on the bottom)
and
AN-5 (two on the top side-four holes total of course). In effect, the
bottom two axle bolts are merely clamping the axle to the gear leg
therefore
leaving all the shear load to be handled to the top two AN-5 bolts.

Anyone have any insight into why the axle would all be AN-5 yet have gear
legs with different size holes?

The two bottom hole are an6 hole due to the up wards load on the axles and
spring gear. They have to be drilled to match it is an update on later
kits. It is well worth the time to do. The bottom bolt will have the most
load on them. When you look at the entire way the spring and axle load on
landing.. If you don't understand let me know and I may be able to describe
it differently.. Dale N269DF SR-033

Makes sense Dale. How did you figure this out or better yet, how did you
find this out? I just double-checked the Murphy website--there is no manual
update or service bulletin listed for this change.

Is this part of the Moose upgrade? Does anyone know if this is suggested for
the "stock" Super-Rebels (SR2500)? I've got about 60 hours on mine now and
no problems to date.

So far, Fred, Dale Fultz seems to be the only person that indicates that the
factory--at some point--started sending out gear legs w/ the bottom two
holes sized to AN-6. According to Dale, there was a notice/bulletin from
the factory but I've never seen such and of course there's no
notice/update/bulletin on their website now. I drilled out all mine to
AN-6, though I never had a problem with a mix of AN-5 and A-6 previously.
