Mounting gear legs to saddles on SR

Fred,
I filled off mostly on the gear leg and went for a snug fit. I fit the
saddle to the leg off the airplane and tightened the saddle to the leg after
it was in place. I cut holes in the bottom of the sills to access the
saddle bolts.

Subject: Mounting gear legs to saddles on SR

Anyone here with experience mating the main gear legs to the saddles
(FUS-309/FUS-310) on the SR? I understand they are to slide into the
saddles
and that the fit should be tight. I've rounded the corners of the gear
legs
to match the radius in the saddles. I've filed the sides of the gear legs
slightly to clean them up, and filed the inner sides of the saddles to
open
them up from 4.975" to 4.90". The gear leg is 5.005" wide, so it's still
about .015" to big. File off too much and the gear will eventually slide
around and enlarge the saddles through use. Should I keep filing the
saddles
or get a bigger hammer? Any hands on experience?

Mounting gear legs to saddles on SR

Fred,
I'm no expert here, but <I> sure would think it would be MUCH
safer to file down the gear leg, rather than the saddles. The saddles
are a major part of the fuselage structure - the gear legs can always
be (fairly) easily replaced later ...

Mounting gear legs to saddles on SR

Fred,

Sorry for the late response, but...

We encountered the same fit with our gear legs. We ended up putting the
legs in a vertical milling machine and took off approx. 0.020", only on
the sides in the saddle mount area. You don't want to remove the small
radius inside the saddle mounts.

We also had the edges of the gear legs chamfered, by hand (mostly
cosmetics). We sure wish MAM would have ground these down by machine
before rolling the legs.
