[rebel-builders] Rebel Rudder Tip Rib Orientation?

Terry,
I made my Fife tail tips all composite. I made plywood ribs, coated them with epoxy and glassed them in with extra glass on the elevator tips.

Hello Group:

After several years, I am revisiting my Fife rudder tail tip section on so I can complete the installation.

Any comments on what is the correct orientation for the RUDDER tail tip rib(s) (EL-29 and FIN-35)? I need to confirm whether flanges (EL-29 & FIN-35) point UP or flanges point DOWN as installed in the fiberglass tip and when installed onto the rudder? The single isometric exploded parts view drawing for the RUDDER that I have shows the flanges pointing UP. However, I have a note from many years ago where Robyn mentioned that "the correct orientation as shown in Chapter 7" (flanges pointing DOWN for the RUDDER). I keep going back to that single isometric drawing that shows the rib flanges pointing UP. Another issue is that if the EL-29/FIN-35 is oriented/installed with the flanges UP, there would be a need for a relatively large hole in the aft end of the EL-29 channel, so upon tip installation, the channel will slide over the top rudder spar attach bolt and the neighboring smaller safety wire bolt.

It seems to me, with the flanges pointing DOWN and with hard left or right rudder in flight, the fiberglass tip would act like "a scoop in the wind" which might put unnecessary stress on the fiberglass tip, attach screws and other hardware downstream.

Any thoughts? Comments? Maybe a non-issue? Everything clear as mud?

Thanks in advance.

[rebel-builders] Rebel Rudder Tip Rib Orientation?

Some guys reverse them and that does perhaps look a bit better on close
inspection but after consideration I installed as per the manual with
flanges down/inboard. Think it seemed easier at the time.

[rebel-builders] Rebel Rudder Tip Rib Orientation?

Yes Ken. The EL-29 and FIN-35 fits into the fiberglass tip much better with the flanges pointing "down" (rudder) and "inboard" (elevator). I am assuming that in-flight climb with hard left and right rudder, the forward tip portion (where EL-29 and FIN-35 are installed) will not act like an air scoop and will not put undo stress on the rest of the assembly?

Thanks for the information.

Thanks Jesse! I recall several years ago that you mentioned that you made the tips from 1/8 inch thick plywood covered with glass cloth and a hole for the spar bolts to go through. Unfortunately, it is way too cold here now to accomplish fiber glassing and need to get some stuff done on R662. Soooo, I "think" I am going to take the path of least resistance and go with the plans aluminum rib materials, nutplates and screws using Ken's suggested orientation of the (EL-29 & FIN-35). Although fabricating the ribs from fiberglass in a great idea! Bulletproof. Bad scheduling/WX on my part I guess. :)

Geez! It is late in the day and a bit tired. I accidentally hit the "Send" button before I re-read my reply to Jesse.

Thanks Jesse! Several years ago you mentioned that the tip ribs were fabricated from 1/8 inch thick plywood covered with several plies of glass cloth and a hole cut for the spar attach bolts. Unfortunately, it is way too cold here to accomplish any fiber glassing and I need to get some stuff accomplished on R662. Soooo, I "think" that the path of least resistance is in order, and will go with the aluminum rib materials, nutplates and screws as called out on the plans. I will use Ken's suggested orientation of the (EL-29 & FIN-35). Although fabricating the ribs from fiberglass is a great idea and will make the assembly bulletproof. Bad scheduling on my part I guess. :)
