Franklin's

Post by Charles Bailey » Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:27 pm

I tried to get this out earler, it got into the
archives, but not posted.

Louis,

I have only have 15 hrs. on my Franklin A4-235 (120HP
@ 2800 RPM) in my Rebel. But so far I like
the engine. Its a little hard to start in the cold
weather (38F) with 80 mineral oil, 8.5 compression,
and no primers.

Oil press is 60PSI with a remote filter, no oil
cooler.
Oil temp runs around 200F and CHT are running 300-350.
with a speed cowl.
The engine is very smooth, with a 70" 3 blade Warp
drive prop and 3" prop extension.

The engine is mounted on a modified Murphy's IO-240.
One brace must be moved and the engine mounted 1 1/8"
out. (Large donut between the mount and the engine to
clear another brace.)

I am not sure you would want to use the speed cowl
with this engine, I had to do a lot of glass work. I
would build the alum. one to fit the Franklin.

Speeds with no farings on the spring gear (800x6
tires), struts or flapperon is about 105MPH at
2400RPM. When its cleaned up I hope to have a cruise
of 110-115 at 2400RPM.

At 2800RPM is IAS of 120MPH at 2000 feet, 61deg F.

I hear you can install the 6 Cyl. pistons (10:1) and get about 140HP.

Chuck,
R176
