[rebel-builders] throttle and mixture cable...

Hello Jean.

Engine choices and panel locations for control locations vary and since I
have an Elite, my lengths won't help you. So, I can only say how I settled
on my cable lengths.

As mentioned by others, you can use either threaded cable termination with
rod ends or wire "lawn mower" ends. I used "lawn mower" cable for my mixture
and rod ends for my throttle. The "lawn mower" solution is the least
expensive and easiest to install. You can order an additional extra couple
of feet at almost no charge. But, when you use threaded rod ends you must
order the proper length, no cutting to length.

Before you determine cable type and length, you need to determine where you
will support the cable from engine movement (on the engine with a bracket,
or on the firewall). The engine really jumps around, especially on start and
stop. This is mostly a rotational movement.

Then you can determine where on the firewall you want the cable to exit.
Give the cables some room between the firewall and engine to "move". A cable
that is too long is better as you can curve it around both behind the panel
and in the engine compartment...somewhat. But, you shouldn't loop it. There
is a specified bend radius for all of the cables.

Certified airplanes use combinations of engine or firewall supported cables
and rod-end or "lawn mower" end cables. I chose to support all of my cables
on the engine and a mix of rod-ends and "lawn mower" (engine and prop:
rod-ends, mixture and carb heat: "lawn mower").

I used a modified bracket from Vans for throttle and mixture support. I also
used threaded control cables for the throttle and prop from Vans, because
they were less expensive than Aircraft Spruce (same supplier) and had other
lengths than foot increments. Vans catalog is online and they seem to always
ship same-day. Don't know what the Canada ship issues are.

Hello

Aircraft spruce show cable in lenght of 3', 4' etc... I am not sure how
figure what I need! Measure from dash to firewall and then from firewall
to carb? Could it be cut? How many loops could I have....

I should live closer of a rebel hangar...

Hello Eric

Yesterday I ordered the Vans bracket that goes between the carb and the
engine bottom. I also ordered 3 cable of 6' (carb. Heat, mixture, cabin
heat). I will wait until bracket is fix before order the throttle to have
precise measure of what I need. Thanks for the answer.

Jean; The standard prop, throttle, & mixture cables with the
knob on one end and a threaded end are not adjustable.

The ones such as on a lawnmower having a spiral wound outer housing and
a 1/16" inner wire can be cut to length. I bought a 30' piece at
hardware store and am using it for about 5 different controls, the price
was very reasonable.
