Rebel Ramble to Atlantic Canada, was Re: Fishing Trip !!!

Hey Bob, how's this for a suggestion, bring a bunch of Rebels to Atlantic Canada and stir
up some interest in these parts! Since you are going to be only a days' flying time from
here by the time you get to Quebec City you might as well come all the way to Halifax and
a few other points around here and maybe even stir up some interest in the media. You
might even find a corporate sponsor or two for a reception & BBQ etc. and maybe even add
to the small population of Rebels in these parts (a comission cheque or two would help
offset the travel costs wouldn't it?).

Apart from that, we would really like to have the chance to see a few more finished
Rebels in person, it would give us a chance to poach some good building ideas and compare
notes.

Give it some thought, there are plenty of scenic diversions & probably a few lobsters to
help pass the time.....

This would likely be AFTER Ramble 2001 .

Next Year's Ramble is still under discussion, but looks like
one week only, probably starting July 7th at the Peterborough COPA
convention, then wandering to Sherbrooke and Quebec City, back to Ottawa,
and ..... Looking for suggestions !!

Hello Aurele! Sorry for the big delay in answering your mail. Our house
network crashed, as well as my computer, and I have been working off a lap
top. Forgot all about your mail that came on the same day, until now!
I figured that would be the bullshit you would get from the park. Amazing
how aviation is a Federal jurisdiction thing and "the province has no
Constitutional capacity to access any planning power over aviation", but
they apparently CAN keep us out of a Provincial Park, in an aircraft that
leaves no pollution in the water, yet allow 100's of boats / week to run
around the lake! I thought maybe things might be different in the "land of
the float plane", but I guess not!
I would imagine IF this trip ever goes ahead, those involved would want to
stay with their aircraft. I don't imagine anyone wants to tie an aircraft to
shore on one lake and then go to another to camp. I know a few people that
have awoke in the middle of the night to gale force winds and had to fill
their floats with water to keep their plane in one place (and piece)! This
wouldn't be possible if not camping with them. I'm sure you know lots of
good local fishing lakes, with some flat ground to set up camp, fold out
boats etc. that would be just as much fun!
I guess we will see what is happening (and who is interested) come spring,
and decide then if it is worth going ahead with!

Wayne, got a chance to meet with the person responsible for the Fishimi
Porvincial Park. It is nearly impossible to get authorization to land in the
park ( on water or otherwise). Lots of problems with security and liability,
and tons of red tape. He'd overlook a forced landing on the lake for
mechanical or other problem, but I doubt he'd buy in to severall mechanical
failures about the same time. The best suggestion we came up with was flying
into an adjuscent lake within miniutes of the park and driving people to and
from this location. I could easely look after this if we decided to go
ahead. This is still an excellent location due to all the facilities,
showers, toilets, washer and dryers etc., not to mention the beach and oh
ya! the fishing.!!!
The group area is best reserved in advance, but is likely a good
choice. It runs at $20 per day, plus $4 per person, which I think is fairly
reasonable. Anyways, there are a few other possibilities, most would be more
remote and likely more expensive as these would involve renting a cabin from
an outfitter. On the other hand, if you wanted goog fishing at he cheapest
price, we could pick a secluded lake and tent it, but this would be really
roughing it and may not be suitable to everyone.
Let me know what you think and we can discuss further.

Rebel Ramble to Atlantic Canada, was Re: Fishing Trip !!!

Thanks for the suggestion, Dave ! We've already had the same
suggestion from several Ramblers .... but it just won't be possible
next year, or for a few years. It usually takes us about 4 years
to recover from a 'big' Ramble, and get some bumps back onto our
VISA cards - they all got worn off !! ;-)

If we were going to come East, we'd need to allow 2 or 3 weeks,
in case of bad weather - also time to enjoy the scenery.... By the time
we get to Quebec next year, we'll only have a couple of days left to
get home !

About the weather - I hear the best time to visit is late August
or September, to miss the fog & rain. Does this sound reasonable ??
Would be interested in suggestions for possible routes and stopovers
for camping or motels. Keep in mind that SOME aircraft (Renegades,
Mavericks, Champs, etc.) might only have a 2 or 2.5 hour range, at
80 mph, or so .... (Planning Rambles can be challenging !! ;-)

A trip East <might> be possible next fall, or the following year,
depending on my being able to arrange another 'demo tour' like I did
this year in the Super Rebel in Quebec and Ontario .... I REALLY
want to do that tour again with our new SUPER DUPER REBEL (the SR-3500)
with the Russian M14-P 360 hp. radial, 3,500 lb gross, on Murphy 3500
Amphib floats !!!! (MAYBE in 2002 .... ) :-)

I guess there's a slim chance of getting the Elite on amphibs
after Sun 'n Fun, for a tour of southern states, up the East coast of
the US, through Maine, and up your way ... Might be a bit cool
in April, though !! :-) It would really depend on how many serious
prospects we could fly and SIGN UP enroute ... ;-)

Rebel Ramble to Atlantic Canada, was Re: Fishing Trip !!!

Hi Bob

Notes below:

What! it isn't a yearly event! Well, let's call it a race to see what happens first, a
Ramble comes to our parts or we get the Elite finished and make it to an Upper Canada
Ramble!

If we were going to come East, we'd need to allow 2 or 3 weeks,
in case of bad weather - also time to enjoy the scenery.... By the time

Weather wise I would think that by the time you get past early June you shouldn't have
many problems until you get into the fall period. If you speak to some of the people who
came to COPA 2000 at Summerside (1 July weekend) they could tell you they dodged some so
- so weather to get in but they did make it. This year was wetter than recent history
though. I would suspect that July & August would be a prime period, the typical peak
time would be late July through early August for warm temps & little rain - in normal
years. If you extended your early July Ramble I don't think you would have many
problems.

For stopovers for the slower aircraft I don't expect there would be serious problems if
you stay on the Canadian side of the border, from Quebec City there is a an airport at
the Que/NB border (across from a big autofuel station/lunch counter for those so
inclined) look for the landmark Lancaster, past this there is another at Riviere du Loup,
Fredericton, St. John, Moncton, Havelock NB - near Moncton, Debert (near Truro, north
central NS), Halifax International & Shearwater at Halifax/Dartmouth. Probably more in
between I don't know about.

Around NS you will find various smaller & larger airports at or near Liverpool, Yarmouth,
Digby, Greenwood (military), Waterville (Home to our EAA Chapter 1051), Stanley
(centrally located ex WWII & home to EAA 305) - might be a good "hub" to work from since
it is club managed and has plenty of space for camping and I am guessing it wouldn't cost
you a cent - talk to Brian Chappel, Trenton, Port Hawkesbury & Sydney etc. For a round
trip you could drop into Charlottown, Summerside & a couple other that I am not up on,
and back to NB at Rogersville, Chatham/Mirimichi (ex military) and no doubt others I am
not familiar with.

A trip East <might> be possible next fall, or the following year,
depending on my being able to arrange another 'demo tour' like I did

Well Bob, it would be interesting to see the latest from Murphy, you might convince a few
fence sitters to come over from the Zenair & RV side (no offence to them but this is a
Murphy forum ;^). I am sure that you will find some interest if you arrange to get over
to Newfoundland, I hear they are big on float planes over there. And like I said, a few
sales comissions would build up those Visa bumps in a hurry and you could even bring your
laptop to do some programming in the quiet moments!

I guess there's a slim chance of getting the Elite on amphibs
after Sun 'n Fun, for a tour of southern states, up the East coast of
the US, through Maine, and up your way ... Might be a bit cool
in April, though !! :-) It would really depend on how many serious
prospects we could fly and SIGN UP enroute ... ;-)
Hey, if you can find some open water (and it is a good bet) bring on the amphibs, there
is a hotel in my neighbourhod that welcomes float planes to it's back door, it's called
Inn on the Lake. That puts you at a 20 minute ride from downtown where you can find what
is reputed to be the biggest selection of pubs per capita in Canada not to mention plenty
of interesting places to eat particularly the local specialty, seafood. We'll even throw
in free lessons on how to eat those lobster for you landlocked folks :^()

Interesting historical things too, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, including
numerous artifacts from the Titanic, an 18th century fortress in the middle of the city,

to Peggys Cove, air & ground A/R, and there could be a chance to do a group tour of the
Swissair 111 reconstruction at Shearwater ex/partial military airport and the military
aviation museum there also. They have a selection of the military aircraft which have
served at Shearwater over the years and are in the middle of restoration of a Fairey
Firefly amongst others. If you wanted to stir up some local media interest, a flight of
Rebels over the city landing at Shearwater would draw attention.

Well Bob, there are a few ideas to run with, let's see what kind of interest it stirs
up.

one week only, probably starting July 7th at the Peterborough COPA
convention, then wandering to Sherbrooke and Quebec City, back to Ottawa,

Constitutional capacity to access any planning power over aviation", but
they apparently CAN keep us out of a Provincial Park, in an aircraft that
leaves no pollution in the water, yet allow 100's of boats / week to run
around the lake! I thought maybe things might be different in the "land of
the float plane", but I guess not! stay with their aircraft.
I'm sure you know lots of
good local fishing lakes, with some flat ground to set up camp, fold out
boats etc. that would be just as much fun! and decide then if it is worth going ahead with!
I could easely look after this if we decided to go
ahead. This is still an excellent location due to all the facilities,
showers, toilets, washer and dryers etc., not to mention the beach and oh
ya! the fishing.!!! choice. It runs at $20 per day, plus $4 per person, which I think is fairly
reasonable. Anyways, there are a few other possibilities, most would be more
remote and likely more expensive as these would involve renting a cabin from
an outfitter. On the other hand, if you wanted goog fishing at he cheapest
price, we could pick a secluded lake and tent it, but this would be really
roughing it and may not be suitable to everyone. http-equiv=Content-Type><!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0

Rebel Ramble to Atlantic Canada, was Re: Fishing Trip !!!

Posted: Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:26 pm
by Bob Patterson
Hi Dave !

The Ramble IS an annual event, but usually just one week - the
BIG ones don't come nearly so often ... :-(

You've given me lots of things to think about - will have to get
the maps out ! The Ramble tries to avoid ALL necessity for radio contact
- no towers, control zones, TRSA's/ARSA's etc. ... The idea is to have
a very low-key fun trip, WITHOUT need for transponders or even radios !!

This rules out a lot of airports, and, because we have ultralights,
Renegades, and Champs & T-Craft flying along sometimes, we have to find
airports about 300 miles apart, or so - sometimes a challenge !

Maybe you WILL get the Elite finished in time to join a small
Ramble here, BEFORE we get another big one organized !! Love to have
you along !!

There IS a lot of interest in Newfoundland - I test flew a Rebel
out of Gander a few years ago, and was impressed by the hangar FULL of
floatplanes ! Not sure how much interest there would be in the Super,
though ... (there's not a lot of money out there ...)

Did the Halifax/Dartmouth, Peggy's Cove ... tour thing about
20 years ago - sounds like there's a LOT more to see now !! Bring on
the pubs & lobster !! :-)

Let's see how much interest there is. I think my best hope
right now is an Eastern Factory Demo Tour, with the Elite on amphibs,
or the Super on wheels, but that's no sure thing ! ...

Thanks for the suggestion, Dave ! We've already had the same
suggestion from several Ramblers .... but it just won't be possible
next year, or for a few years. It usually takes us about 4 years
to recover from a 'big' Ramble, and get some bumps back onto our
VISA cards - they all got worn off !! ;-)
What! it isn't a yearly event! Well, let's call it a race to see what
happens first, a
Ramble comes to our parts or we get the Elite finished and make it to an
Upper Canada
Ramble!

(Planning Rambles can be challenging !! ;-)
Weather wise I would think that by the time you get past early June you
shouldn't have
many problems until you get into the fall period. If you speak to some of
the people who
came to COPA 2000 at Summerside (1 July weekend) they could tell you they
dodged some so
- so weather to get in but they did make it. This year was wetter than
recent history
though. I would suspect that July & August would be a prime period, the
typical peak
time would be late July through early August for warm temps & little rain -
in normal
years. If you extended your early July Ramble I don't think you would have
many
problems.

For stopovers for the slower aircraft I don't expect there would be serious
problems if
you stay on the Canadian side of the border, from Quebec City there is a an
airport at
the Que/NB border (across from a big autofuel station/lunch counter for
those so
inclined) look for the landmark Lancaster, past this there is another at
Riviere du Loup,
Fredericton, St. John, Moncton, Havelock NB - near Moncton, Debert (near
Truro, north
central NS), Halifax International & Shearwater at Halifax/Dartmouth.
Probably more in
between I don't know about.

Around NS you will find various smaller & larger airports at or near
Liverpool, Yarmouth,
Digby, Greenwood (military), Waterville (Home to our EAA Chapter 1051), Stanley
(centrally located ex WWII & home to EAA 305) - might be a good "hub" to
work from since
it is club managed and has plenty of space for camping and I am guessing it
wouldn't cost
you a cent - talk to Brian Chappel, Trenton, Port Hawkesbury & Sydney etc.
For a round
trip you could drop into Charlottown, Summerside & a couple other that I am
not up on,
and back to NB at Rogersville, Chatham/Mirimichi (ex military) and no doubt
others I am
not familiar with.

A trip East <might> be possible next fall, or the following year,
depending on my being able to arrange another 'demo tour' like I did
this year in the Super Rebel in Quebec and Ontario .... I REALLY
want to do that tour again with our new SUPER DUPER REBEL (the SR-3500)
with the Russian M14-P 360 hp. radial, 3,500 lb gross, on Murphy 3500
Amphib floats !!!! (MAYBE in 2002 .... ) :-)
Well Bob, it would be interesting to see the latest from Murphy, you might
convince a few
fence sitters to come over from the Zenair & RV side (no offence to them
but this is a
Murphy forum ;^). I am sure that you will find some interest if you
arrange to get over
to Newfoundland, I hear they are big on float planes over there. And like
I said, a few
sales comissions would build up those Visa bumps in a hurry and you could
even bring your
laptop to do some programming in the quiet moments!

I guess there's a slim chance of getting the Elite on amphibs
after Sun 'n Fun, for a tour of southern states, up the East coast of
the US, through Maine, and up your way ... Might be a bit cool
in April, though !! :-) It would really depend on how many serious
prospects we could fly and SIGN UP enroute ... ;-)
Hey, if you can find some open water (and it is a good bet) bring on the
amphibs, there
is a hotel in my neighbourhod that welcomes float planes to it's back door,
it's called
Inn on the Lake. That puts you at a 20 minute ride from downtown where you
can find what
is reputed to be the biggest selection of pubs per capita in Canada not to
mention plenty
of interesting places to eat particularly the local specialty, seafood.
We'll even throw
in free lessons on how to eat those lobster for you landlocked folks :^()

Interesting historical things too, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic,
including
numerous artifacts from the Titanic, an 18th century fortress in the middle
of the city,
Atlantic Canadian Aviation Museum (across from Halifax Intl., YHZ) , the
requisite visit
to Peggys Cove, air & ground A/R, and there could be a chance to do a group

Rebel Ramble to Atlantic Canada, was Re: Fishing Trip !!!

by AzAlexR
I am sorry to send this news but Alex Russell passed on to be with our Lord
on 8/25/00. Perhaps you could let the rebel builders know. I will be taking
his e-mail address off in the next mo. or so. He was diagnosed with brain
cancer 4/21 & we were told 6 mo to a yr. He had no pain but his body shut
down. I am thankful I was able to keep him at home with the help of hospice.
He was good until the day before & his lungs filled with fluid & his heart
wore out. He lived a full life, was not afraid to die. We had a beautiful
service at Arlington VA where his cremains were placed. He decided on that
about 3 mo. before. It is the perfect place for him as he flew out of
Washington Natl for years on the Eastern Shuttle. The chaplain had to stop
talking as the planes took off overhead!! I am sure he will be pleased to be
there. Sincerely,
Doris Russell
