[rebel-builders] Amphib Brake Problem

I had the same problem with the same brake unit on the wheel gear - pads
were worn too far and the puck would stick at the over extended point.
Took about 4 tries to get it to seal after that. Grrr. PITA for sure but
it will work again. Good luck.

Just wondering if anyone has run into this problem and how they fixed it. I
had been noticing that my left amphib brake calipers have been sticking a
bit. It was most noticeable when I was pulling the plane into the hangar. I
know I am getting older and weaker, but found that I sometimes needed to
push the plane from the front, instead of pulling it in backwards into my
hangar like I always used to, even with full fuel. It was a kind of gradual
thing over time, and I could hear the calipers dragging on the rotor, too as
I pulled it in, but finally reached the point where only pushing worked.

Anyway, the problem was definitely getting worse, so I finally took the time
tonight to jack up my wheel and see what gives. What I found is that the
caliper assembly was frozen tight. The other wheel was loose and could
easily be wiggled by my fingers, but not this one. I then pried it a bit
with a screw driver and then it loosened up, and then I could spin the wheel
by hand, no problem. I then applied brake pedal pressure in the cabin, and
again it froze up, and needed to be pried loose with the screwdriver. I
applied brake on the other side, too, and it wouldn't freeze. So there is
definitely something wrong with my left brakes.

I haven't taken anything apart yet, and thought I would ask here if anyone
has any ideas as to the problem. I suspect it might be the puck and O ring
somehow jamming. This is the same side that I had a leak a few years back,
and had to change the O ring on the puck. Or is it just that my pads are so
far worn that the puck is coming out too far or something like that.

[rebel-builders] Amphib Brake Problem

Hi Walter I'd check for the obvious first a kinked or crushed brake line
preventing the oil from leaving the caliper. Badly wore pads on cars can
sometimes let the piston come out far enough to slightly cock and not
retract. Are you still able to steer?

Hi Walter When you check your pads have a look at both of them. Sometimes
the sliders on the caliper get sticky and one side will wear much faster
than the other.

Well, I've got over 500 hours now on these pads, so I should probably think
about replacing them if I take them apart. Are these off the shelf common
pads, or are they a special Cleveland part number?

[rebel-builders] Amphib Brake Problem

Posted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:02 pm
by Richard Wampach
Walter the 66- series brake parts are a Cleveland part number. You
might find a RA66- part which is RAPCO, and is FAA / PMA interchangeable
part.
By local do you mean Kragen and Napa? I doubt that the auto parts
stores carry them. Most Aircraft parts sources should have them in
stock. Aircraft Spruce carries them in RAPCO. Page 234 of the 08/09
catalog shows them at $6.25 each. You will also need the brass rivets
listed on the same page 3 for each of that pad PN. Kits are also
listed, and if you don't have it the tool for driving them out and
setting the new ones. Do not drill them out!

Hi Walter I'd check for the obvious first a kinked or crushed brake
line
preventing the oil from leaving the caliper. Badly wore pads on cars
can
sometimes let the piston come out far enough to slightly cock and not
retract. Are you still able to steer?

Just wondering if anyone has run into this problem and how they fixed
it.
I
had been noticing that my left amphib brake calipers have been
sticking a
bit. It was most noticeable when I was pulling the plane into the
hangar.
I
know I am getting older and weaker, but found that I sometimes needed
to
push the plane from the front, instead of pulling it in backwards
into my
hangar like I always used to, even with full fuel. It was a kind of
gradual
thing over time, and I could hear the calipers dragging on the rotor,
too
as
I pulled it in, but finally reached the point where only pushing
worked.

Anyway, the problem was definitely getting worse, so I finally took
the
time
tonight to jack up my wheel and see what gives. What I found is that
the
caliper assembly was frozen tight. The other wheel was loose and
could
easily be wiggled by my fingers, but not this one. I then pried it a
bit
with a screw driver and then it loosened up, and then I could spin
the
wheel
by hand, no problem. I then applied brake pedal pressure in the
cabin,
and
again it froze up, and needed to be pried loose with the screwdriver.
I
applied brake on the other side, too, and it wouldn't freeze. So
there is
definitely something wrong with my left brakes.

I haven't taken anything apart yet, and thought I would ask here if
anyone
has any ideas as to the problem. I suspect it might be the puck and O
ring
somehow jamming. This is the same side that I had a leak a few years
back,
and had to change the O ring on the puck. Or is it just that my pads
are
so
far worn that the puck is coming out too far or something like that.

Walter

[rebel-builders] Amphib Brake Problem

Walter... go see your local AME on the field. Ask him if he has 4 pads in
stock, that he can sell you/install for you, and then remove your pad
holders and take them to him. It will then be done properly without the need
to buy a rivet removal/set tool. Then pay the lad and reinstall them on your
bird.

Thanks Wayne. I found those pads on the Aircraft Spruce site. Can these be
found as generic items at local brake shops, too?

Well, I've got over 500 hours now on these pads, so I should probably
think
about replacing them if I take them apart. Are these off the shelf common
pads, or are they a special Cleveland part number?

Hi Walter When you check your pads have a look at both of them. Sometimes
the sliders on the caliper get sticky and one side will wear much faster
than the other.
