I put the witches hat on before mounting the firewall and had no
problem. Don't think I needed anything else other than clamps to hold it
while drilling.

Hi Ben,
Installing all of the firewall stiffeners, ie witches hats and float
braces, prior to installing the firewall is the only way to go.
But, in my opinion, don't rivet the firewall in place until you have as
much done under the panel as possible. It sure is a lot easier to do your
wiring while sitting on a chair instead of laying on your back. I also installed
the co-pilot torque tube bearing support with rivetnuts for easy removal so I
can move the torque tube out of the way for working under the panel after the
firewall is installed. It's hard enough to get my bi-focals in the right
spot without a torque tube poking me in the back while trying to dodge the
stick.

Hi Ben, I also mounted the witches hat but only with clecos until I had it
installed. Now I actually wish I had turned the firewall around so that the
lip was inside the cabin instead of engine side. Some builders have pointed
out that the airflow out of the engine compartment is restricted or
redirected by the lip. One of the things I still have to do is smooth out
that transition.

Jim, yeah, now that you mention it I recall past recommendations to have
the lip go backward ....Rats, two days after I've drilled to the side
panels and floor Fus-7 with the lip forward.

I'll start bracing up that firewall tonight tho, and definitely stay in
cleco mode. Another goosey thing on fitting the firewall is that 1 3/32"
block. It seems whacky to me that it is called out to a 32nd of an inch
but they show the block of random width/length and the firewall itself over
the center of the block -- i.e. the height of the firewall is then
determined by where-ever the inside edge of the block touches the floor
skin. With just a (random) 3" wide block this changes height by maybe 4
times the 32nd accuracy called for. I moved my block further out than the
24 1/2 " called for so that the bottom of the firewall sits exactly 1 3/32
above the table. I hope this is right ...I see another diagram a few pages
later in MAM that seems to show the firewall siting on the edge of the block.

All this affects the height placement of the Fus-11 side panels on the
Fus-4 uprights. Obviously a good cross check is to make sure Fus-11 L & R
are the same before poking holes into Fus-4. It'd be nice if that height
dimension were shown because that alone (assuming a braced flat firewall)
would ensure proper firewall angle. Don't mean to sound like a PIA
builder. Really, I'm not as cranky as I may sound.
