Moose vertical fin: manual discrepancies

Post by Ted Waltman » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:55 pm

Hello Jeff,

I have several versions of the Moose manual, vertical fin chapter 5. The
latest version, dated 5/27/2005, lists two rear spar doublers, FIN0502 in
the parts list. These two doublers are also shown in the fin assembly
diagram (as item #3). Yet the text of the chapter makes absolutely no
mention of these doublers. There is no step-no instruction-regarding
installation of these doublers.

Also interesting is that on page 5 of the chapter, under section 5.3 Pivot
Install references ST-403 spar doubler in step 1. ST-403 is not shown in
the assembly diagram nor is ST-403 shown in the parts list! Furthermore,
this part ST-403 is not listed on the master kit inventory we received.

If I go back and reference a version of the chapter dated Oct 26, 1999
neither FIN0502 nor STA0403 are listed. Hence, it seems that at some point
the factory deemed it necessary to upgrade the strength of the rear spar by
adding the doublers.

Questions:

- Why was this rear spar doubler upgrade added? What event or
engineering/design review prompted the change?

- At what serial # did the change to add the rear spar doubler take
place? It seems to me that potential kit purchases-those who might purchase
a kit from a previous builder-would want to know what upgrades to look for
and which they need to order or fabricate themselves.

- What does ST-403 look like and what alloy/thickness is it
fabricated from so we can make the part and then properly follow the
instructions in chapter 5, section 5.3, step 1?

Comment:

I'm sorry for venting my frustration on you Jeff, but it infuriates me to
see such a wonderful plane-an outstanding product-suffer due to such a poor
manual. There are issues/discrepancies and problems in every chapter. The
issue I cite in this email is but the latest.
