[rebel-builders] Moose- No tailwheel steering

Post by Bob Patterson » Sun Feb 19, 2012 4:51 pm

Hi Mike !

If this is the old original tailwheel setup, you would only
hit the detent if the tailwheel was aligned straight back,
in a normal trail position. If that was the case, the pin might
be stuck - they need a bit of grease every 4th or 5th flight.

I usually keep a grease gun handy, & grease the tailwheel
bearings regularly, with an extra bit of grease on a finger
to put on the bottom of the horn mechanism for the
slide pin.

If a bit of grease doesn't help, you might have a broken
spring - the small one that pushes the pin, or maybe a
broken pin. You might have to remove the steering horn
& flip it over to check this .... Sometimes, the corners
of the pin are worn round, but you should still feel it ...

I started on my way to the runway today only to quickly discover that I
had no tailwheel steering. After returning to parking I moved the steering
horn on the tailwheel back and forth and felt no detent. My kit was
purchased about 10 years ago, and I'm serial number 44. Anybody know what
the problem likely is and what kind of tailwheel I have? Also, what's up
with a tailwheel failure after only about 17 hours on it?
