[rebel-builders] 2024 and 6061

Hi Garry !

A lot depends on where you are using it ...
generally, in sheets, you're better off to find the 6061 !
It's usually less expensive too ....

2024 is MUCH faster to corrode - not good on floats.
and tends to crack much more easily if flexed often....
It is stronger for tensile loads - that's why it is used in
heavy fittings.

If you are going to mix them, be sure to separate
them with lots of epoxy primer -- good to completely coat
the 2024 anyway, so it will last a bit longer ...
You could get bi-metallic corrosion if they touch, especially
in water a lot.

Garry:

I ordered some from Aircraft Spruce. They will roll a 4x12 sheet and even with shipping costs they were several hundred dollars less then any local supplier for me.

They will also roll smaller pieces, depending on thickness and material.
Just ask them on the phone ...it can make a big difference in shipping costs.

Don't forget that 6061T6 is a common commercial sheet and is easier to
get from industrial suppliers than from most aircraft suppliers.

Garry, do you have the small metal mart shops in the Calgary? The ones here
(several in Langley) carry scraps of many sizes and types, and not hard to
find 6061.

I like the corrosion resistance of 6061 and not having to worry about
scratching off the alclad on 2024.

Hi Gary, I used to get 6061 at a company called Peckovers just north of
Toronto. They've been bought by ThyssenKrupp and they do have an office in
Edmonton.

They might have what you need.

Cheers

Thanks Walter. I'll try them too if they are here. We have Metals
